SOCIETY. Mrs. McLean’s Reception—Senator His- cock’s Dinner—Coming Keceptions. Mrs, McLean of Lafayette square gave a very elaborate “at home” yesterday afternoon from 4107. The guests were presented as they ar- rived to the guest of the house, Mrs, Gen. Grant Mrs. McLean received the company in a rich gown of ivory white silk draped in black lace. Mrs. Grant, who stood by her side, was in a handsome toilet of black satin. The rooms were fragrant with « profusion of cut flowers and the scene was illuminated brilliantly. In the dining room the table was loaded with every delicacy, and salads, croquettes, oysters, fancy ices, cakes, coffee. bouillon and punch was served during the reception. Mrs. Hazen, in « beautiful toilet of mousseline de soie, Mrs. MeCook in white sheer muslin, Mrs. Logan in black satin, Miss Ballie Sehenck in gray silk, and Mr. Me- Lean and Mr. Jno. R. There was an impromptu musicale at the White House yesterday afternoon, when Miss Anna Louise Powell and her guest, Miss Parks, culled upon the ladies there, Col. and Mra. Staples are grateful to their many friends who brightened the sick roow of Mrs. Staples with flowers and delica- cies and good wishes during her recent illness. Mrs. Staples was able to sit up yesterday and hopes soon to be quite well again. Roscoe Saylor, seven years of age, who has been living in Allentown, Pa., with his grand- father, Joseph H. Meyers, was abducted on the the streets Thursday by a stranger. Seven years ago the boy's father was married to Mr. Meyers’ daughter and removed to Reading. About two months ago he deserted his wife and left for parts unknown, A strange man induced a boy to call at the school which young Saylor attended snd inform the teacher that Saylor was wanted at home.
