Supermtendent Powell is a mild- mannered man and offered no obstruction, ‘The biack children walked in and took posses- sion of all the desks they found unoccupied, ‘The white pupils protested and began to pack up their books and make preparatious to leave. Some of the colored boys grinned at the white girls. and as soon ax the negro men left the building the white pupils assaulted the biacks. There was «a bard ficht for fifteen minutes, during which books ink stands, rab and hgir filled the air. The wh drove the blacks out of the room, chased the out of the yard and continued the fight in the street. The white giris urged their champions on with encouraging shouts and brough them munitions of war when possible. - THE YOUNG KIN His Condition is Much More F After a Restful Night. Commissioner Douglass sat in the front row and watched the proceedings quite closely, SPEECH OF CHAUNCEY M. DEPEW, The entraace of Chauncey M. Depew was the signal for an outburst of applause. The clever orator had come on a special train, so some of his neighbors said, in order that he might arrive on time. He was really fifteen minutes late, but he caused no delay. It was very Wallace, Farquhar, Sherman, Belden, Col. | well, he said, to draw circles demonstrating Brady of Virginia anda Maryland delegation i ‘ . headed by Gen, Ross, 7 gal that Chicago or St. Louis was the center of a greater population than was New York. He was born at Peekskill, on the Hudson. A cir- cle drawn around that piace, he said, included many great cities and represented a great num- ber of people, but Peekskill was not an aspirant for ‘the fair. [Great applause. Within the limits of what constitutes the city of New York, Jersey City, &e., you have three Chicagos, Eight million people in the hsiegs A could visit the fair at New York for a sum of not more that #2 and from that down to 5 cents. On the transportation problem, be said, depended largeiy the success of the fair. Two hundred thousand wishing to go home from St. Louis or Chicago could not dis- perse at the rate of more than 25,000 per hour and this would take eight hours, and the next day the fair would close. New York could dis- tribute the crowd more rapidly than was done at Paris. REFERRING TO THE FINANCIAL PROBLEM he said that the exposition could not go on rec- ord. It would not be possible to sell bonds, so the “chromo business” could not be a succes, Chicago and St. Louis had memorial funds of 24,000,000 each—New York a collective assess- ment of $5,300,000. The bill was now ready to be presented ‘to the New York legislature au- thorizing the expenditure of 10,000,000, which, he said. would pass without a dissenting voice.
