Asking That the Building Regulations be Modified. For some time past the architects and build- ers of Washington have been sorely troubled on account of the clause in the building regula- tions which prohibits them from constructing solid stone parapet walls above the platforms atentrances, Since the new regulations were adopted, in which a clause appears empowering the inspector of buildings to approve all out- side projections, with a view to prevent these solid walls, the architects and builders are striving to have this clause modified, Today a committee composed of ‘f. F. Schneider, C. A, Didden and Robert Stead, representing the chapter of architects of the éity of Washington, called upon the Commissioners and asked that the regulations be modified and detined. They requested permission to insert in the regulu- tions a clause allowing a projection from the building line of five feet b; — and arapet walls not over seven feet above grade, The Yroubl oss ae been bytes vet me when erected obstruc' 16 View \- ing property owners, Commissioners wiil look into the mate. The influence of the grip is felt in the de- partments of the government in the increased uumber of employes who are absent on account of sickness, At this time of the year there is a good deal of sickness generally, but at present the proportion of absentees from illness is greater than during the corresponding period of last year, All grades of employes are afilicted, from chiefs of divisions down to mes- sengers, -The absence of any kind of discrimi- nationon the part of the prevailing influenza is a notable feature of it. It seems to recog- nize no distinctions of class, condition or age. The government, however, is able to go on in ail its departments and so far the public bus ness has been transacted only with some slight hitches, At the city post office the grip still holds full sway, with no prospect of letting up. Today 11 carriers, 5 clerks in the mailing division, 5in the registry division and 10 inthe mailing di- vision are abseut from their posts of duty. AT THE HEALTH OFFICE there is nothing new to be learned aboutethe progress of the grip in this city, although one of the clerks is absent today, presumably with that disease. There have been no deaths re- ported from pneumonia or other pulmonary complaints within the last forty-eignt hours, aud it is hoped that the present colder clear weather may do something toward stopping the spread of the disease. The hoalth officials say ifthe temperature had fallen to twenty de- grees it would be of the greatest benefit, but us it is the change of weather may be of con- siderable service.
