Abbey does ho generally does well, and in bringing two such artists to Washington as Pablo Sarasate, the violinist, aud Eugen D'Aibert, the pianist, he. exceeds even himself. Since Rubenstein and Wieniowski there have not been in America such musicians as these, and praise of them would seem to be a work of supercrogation. Sarasate is a violinist unexcelled in all the world, and though he tunes his strings to core the highest measures, there is such grace and beauty and soul in his music that even the simplest may enjoy the divine harmonies of his wonderful making. ‘his is the real music, and only the artist bor can give it voice. What Sara- te isto the violin his concert companion D'Albert is almost, if not quite, to the piano. A performer of marvelous technique, he is not the iess the interpreter of music's deepest meaning. Wherever these artists have ap- peared they have won enthusiastic applause, and the press is aunt im its praise of their work, In this city the best andience Washing- ton can furnish is promised, and already the sale of seats at Droop’s music store has gone beyond $1,200 for the concert at Lincoln hall on Thursday evening. —————— Another Pistol Carrier Fined. Philip Williams, a colored man, wasin the Po- lice Court this morning charged with being loud and boisterous and carrying a weapon, which he drew on Charles Kelly in Nathan Brown’s saloon. He claimed to be working out beyond Mount Pleasant and thought he needed @ pistol for his protection, Judge Miller, how- ever, said that carrying a pistol did not give a working man a very good reputation, especially when he draws it at the first provocation. Wil- liams was fined $10 for being loud and boister- ous aad $50 for carrying the pistol. Judge Miller said he was sorry he could not send him to jail, for he wanted fo break up this habit of carrying weapons, a Knights of Honor Installation. From the Clothier aad Furnisher. Green in the invisible dark shades will be a color permanently seen in mixed suitings and spring overcoatings. It is a pleasure to be able to verify a predic- tion made early in its introduction that the Tuxedo coat had come to stay. It is more gen- erally worn by fashionable men than ever since its inception. There is an effort to be made with a view of reviving the opera hat. Some of the best authorities on dress among the men of the fashionabie world are in hearty accord with the idea, and already the leading batters have begun featuring this convenignt tile of full dress in their show windows. The velvet collars on the finer smooth-faced styles of men’s top coats are being made more liberal than heretofore, With the cloth edz they now measure fully two and one-half inches of turnover, The styles in men's straw hats for the coming season will tend more to the fanciful than iast season, The silk hat bands will be in a variety of solid colors and combination. Neglige shirtings will be offered in ailks, silk | wefts, plain and fancy flannels, madras, chevi- ots, merveilieux and other special fabrics in variety five-fold greater than last season. The plain wide-bosomed ‘iress shirt continues to be more prevalent among the sweils, al though the efforts to bring more prominently forward the embroidered shirt front does not abate in the least. The jewelers profit nowadays but little in the matter of shirt studs, The simplest imitation of a linen button in the impressive mother of pearl mounted on gold spirais are correct and within the means of any one who wishesto be in the vogue. The excruciatingly howling latest wrinkle in shirt studs is to have the old-style shirt buttons sewed on in the good old way and button through the upper flap of the bosom. A curious memory of the current season will be that while the size of the neck-wear has in- creased the loud tone of the fabric: \d garish- ness of design have greatly moderated. The majority of the high-class scarfings shown have been elegant in an unostentatious way. There has been, too, an unstinted air in respect to the material, however fine the texture, and the isplay has been greater in variety and in better taste than ever before. The two-and- one-half inch four-in-hand has been the leader, with the Ascot finishing in a good place and the De Joinville running in thoroughbred form. When a scarf pin is worn with the four-in- hand or the Ascot tied ina similar knot, bear in mind that it is the strictly modish idea to insert the pin so that the head will fall upon the center of the lower edge of the crossfold. If the cost partially hides the bauble so much the better, for when the scarf pin is seen it will appear to be exhibited rather by accident than intention, The London craze over the extra-wide self-tied scarfings, in all manner of irregular shapes, is the costliest fad in tie silks introduced in many years. The knottings, seemingly careless, are exceedingly distingue, and agoodly number of huge made-up puff scarfs in imitation thereof have made an ap- pearance. The fastening of the scarfing at one side or the other is the province of the scarf ring, armiet safety pin or whatever decoration or gewgaw in the utilization of an attachment ——— e- — Happy, Though Deaf, Dumb and Blind. In days gone by to be deaf, dumb and blind was little better than death, but in these days of modern inventions, when science has done so much for the improvement of the condition of every one, such afflictions are not unbear- able, The popular idea that persons deprived of the use of these three senses cannot enjoy life is a wrong one, according to Helen Keller, a fifteen-year-old inmate of the Perkins insti- tute for the blind in Boston. Some time ago she made the acquaintance of Albert Nolen, an inmate of the American asylum in Hartford, and on Christmas sent bim a long letter. Emory, No. 2112 Calvert | MARRIAGE AND CIVILIZATION, An Elegant Defense of the Christian Sacrament and the Ethics Involved. J, in the January Foram The enemies of proper marriage assume that Christianity is hopeles ly discredited, Weil, for the sake of argument, let us suppose that this isso, Does it follow that the ethics of marriage, which, as a matter of fact, the modern world has received from Christianity, are also discredited? I reply, most certainly Bot. The ethics taught by Christianity are in- dependent of those mysteries and would sub- Sist to all eternity. thougi Christianity and all religions were swept into oblivion. The moral law is ascertained, not from the announcements of prophets, apostles, evangel- ists, but from a natural and permanent revela- tion of the reason. The great fundamental truths of ethics are necessary, like the great fundamental truths of mathematica. So much concerning Christianity and ethics in general. And now, of the ethics of marriage in particu- lar. The earliest form of marriage known to Us Was that in which the bride was obtained by capture, her volition counting for nothing, ber consent not even sought, Then she was ac- counted a mere chattel. Now she is recog- nized asa person; her liberty inviolable; her Will free; to be won, she must be wooed. Now Marriage is a contract, and is subject to the ethical rules that govern all contracts, Marriage is something more than a mere contract. We may put aside the ecclesiastical view of it. Quite apart from that view, from those considerations, we must account for it, For it isa symbol of the mystery whereby our spiritual life is joined to our ily frames, Nay, it is more than that, It is the outward, ible, eminently sensuous means whereby we attain to the inward spiritual grace of the purest joys, the most unselfish affections that this world offers. Jt is a natural sacrament, of which the husband and the wife are them- selves the ministers, It is the accomplishment of the man’s man- hood and of the woman's womanhood; the blending of two personalities in a social organ- ism embracing their whole existences. But the personalties, thengh equal, are diverse. More, there are far-reaching psychical differences, The old platonic fable that the woman is the other half of the man is profoundly true. She is the complement of him and he of her Let the perfect ideal of indissoluble be once detinitively rejected by the world and human society will inevitably fall back to that wallowing in the mire from which the church rescued it, And in whatever degree you tamper | with this ideal and derogate from its strictness, | in that degree do you demoralize woman. Yes, | aud man, too; for assuredly he speedily sinks | to her level. The moral tone of society, I say, | depends upon the chastity of woman. And the chasuty of woman depends upon the absolute | character of marriage. oe Hl An English Opinion of Davis.
