H. Boker. Geo, H. Boker, who died yesterday, as stated in Tae Stak, entered Princeton at fifteen, and had Joho C. Breckenridge, Chas, G. Leland and Theodore T. Frelinghuysen as classmates, His college course indicated throughout @ future brilliant career. Bright and apt asa scholar, he stood among the first in bis class and won the highest honors in the department of belles-lettres, which was his favorite branch of study. He published his first book in 1847 after a year in Europe on his wedding tour. Its title was “The Lesson of Life and Other Poems.” His first decided success in literature was “Calaynos, a Tragedy,” which was first played in England. In February, 1850, he pro- duced the tragedy of ‘and afterward two q * nnd “All the World a Mask.” both of which were produced im this city with success, His next production, “The Podesta's Daughter and Uther Pooms,” appeared at the close of 1851. Later he wrote the tragedies of “Leonor de Guzman” and “Francesca da Rimini”—the latter an extension of the celebrated episode in Dante's “Inferno”—and both were produced upon the stage with success, His plays and poems, in two volumes, were published in 1856, His best fame rests on his writings during the war. That great event changed the diree- tion of the poet's activity and as a devoted loyalist he gave all his time toward keeping alive, organizing and consolidating the pe- triohe seutiment of the country. Notable for their martial feeling were the songs “Sheridan, Sheridan, Cavalry Sheridan,” and the poem “The Black Regiment,"which had a marked ef- fect in securing colored troops. His “Poems ot the War” were collected and taxa volume in I864 and several edi- issued that year. In 1865 he de- fivered a poem entitied “Our Heroic Themes,” before the Phi Beta Kappa society of Harvard University and subsequently repeated it in this city at the reunion of the ofticers of the Army of the Potomac. In i869 he published “Konig Smarke, the Legend of the Hounds and Other Poems,” and three years later his last volume, “The Rook of the Dead,” which was designed in vindication of his father’s memory. In November, 1862, Mr. Boker, Morton MeMich: Judge J. LC. Hare, Benjamiv Ger- nard and Charles acting ns a standing committee, together with several other promi- nent Philadelphians, formed the Union club, out of which grew the powerful Union League As minister to Russia he displayed rare diplomacy. To him was due the representa- tion ot Turkey and Russia at the cen- tennial of 1576, His wife was Miss Julia Riggs of Maryland. TOLD BY Oo! How the Sun Affects the Weather— Interesting Facts. The solar disturb- ances which caused severe and widespread storms during the first eight months of 1589 are now obscure, spots being rarely seen, But there is evidence of some activity at the seat of the disturbances. Whenever violent action is resumed our atmoxphere willbe vexed in proportiou to the violence on the sum $$ een Congress and the Civil Service, From the i hiladelphia Press, There are very few blunders that the demo- crats would svouer see the republicans commit during the present session of Congress than re- peal the civil service reform Jaw or the placing of some obstacle in the way of its enforcement. There 1s little danger that the republicans will fall into so evident an error as to wipe the statute off the books, but there hw m re- the jaw into effect naught be cat down or held altovether or that the Senate might refuse to confirm President Harrison's appoitment of civil service reform commissivners, Congressmen must have strongly mistaken the driftut public sentiment on this subject, and of the republican party expecially, if they imagine that they will represent their constitu- eu’ or increase their popularity by favoring « repeal cf the law or hampering its operation in any way. There have been decided expres- sions of opinion in opposition to the reform from a half dozen republican members of Con- gress during the past few months, But this has only served to call out a more general and pronounced expression in favor of the law from promivent republicans and leading party or- guns than has ever been heard before, ‘The republican party is now more thoroughly committed to this reform than ever. All the leading organs of the party have given their adbesion to it. The newspaper advocates of civil service reform at present include such apersas the Boston Juurnal, the Hartford Courant, the New York Trine, the Philadel- phia Press, the Cleveland Leader, the Indian- apolis Journal, the Chicago Tritume, the Chi- 0 Inter-Vcvan, the St. Paul Proneer Press, the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and other well- known papers, ‘hese newspapers may be taken as fairly representing the republican ty. They would not advocate the reform if jocal sentiment did not justify them im taking ‘that attitude. ‘The tricads of the reform need not fear then that it will receive any decided setbacks during the present session of Congress, Its progress during the past nine months and its favorable position now as compared with the ground it occupied @ year ago must be the cause of great encouragement, There are four decided evi- dences of this advance, They are the high standard of appointments which bas ruled ‘under the present administration, the selection of a civil service board unconditionally in favor of the reform, the advanced position taken by the republican papers on the subject and the choice of @ civil service committee in the House of Representatives, a majority of whose members are pronounced civil service re- formers. ns show that the reform is All these indicati in the bands of it triends, that the law will be upheld and improved and that the republican Congressman who opposes it is strangely blind to the driit of sentiment im his party.
