JUAN Lewis. ——cee____. Drowned With Christmas Gifts in His Hands. Appeal ‘From the Ssvannah News. The body of Thomas Glass, chief engineer of the British steamship Hampshire, who was drowned ip the river at the Lamar cotton press wharves, was recovered yesterday noon by Chief Officer Guthrie of the British steamship Venice, who was dragging for the body. The was interred at 4:30 o'clock in the St Andrew's society lot in Laurel Grove cemetery. The last time the deceased was seen in lile was Saturday night, after supper, when he left the vessel to come up town to buy some Christ- mas cards and papers to mail to his children in time toreach their home in London by Christmas day. When the body was recovered the purchases were pressed closely to his side, under his arm, the evidence of « father's affec- tion to the last, ——__—+e+ —______ Antiquity of Christmas Toys. ‘From Biackwood's Mawazine. The doll is thousands of years old; it has been found inside the graves of little Roman children and will be found again by the arche- ologiste of a future date among the remains of our own culture. The children of Pompeii and Herculaneum trundled hoops just as you and I did, and who knows whether the rocking horse on which we rode in our young days is not a lineal descendant of that proud charger into whose wooden flanks the children of Francis I’s time dug their spurs. ‘The drum is indestructible, and setting time at naught across the centuries, it beas the Christmas-tide and New Year summons that bids the tin soldier prepare himself for war, and shall. continue to beat as long as there ex- ist boy arms to weild the drumsticks, and grown-up "s ears to be deafened by the sound thereof. The tine soldier views the future with calm; he will not lay down his arms until the day of general disarmament, and there is, age no prospect of a universal peace. ¢ toy sword also stands its Ground; it is the nursery symbol of the ineradicable vice of our race—the lust for battle. Harlequins, fool’s-cap-crowned and bell ringing are also likely to endure; they are sure to be found among the members of the toy world as long as there are fools to be found ase the in- habitants of our own. Gold-laced knights, their swords at their sides, curly-locked and satin-shod princesses, stalwalt musketeers, mus- tached and top-booted, are all types which still hold their own. The Chinese doll is young as yet, but she hasa brilliant tuture before her. Two Actors Fight on a Train. Louis Aldgick aud Clem Carrington, mem- bers of the “Wages of Sin” theatrical troupe, engaged in a disgraceful fight on a Lehigh Valley passenger train near Chain Dam, Pa., yesterday. The car was filled with passengers, a large number of them being ladies and chil- dren, The fight was brought about by Aldrich roy ae Carrington with having used inault- ing language to his wife. Carrington called Aldrich a liar and got several raps over his head, delivered forcefully with a heavy-han- died umbrella, He then seized ‘Aldrich, plumped him iuto @ seat and hammered him unmercifully, ——_—_-+_____. Fed Her Father Paris Green. Lewis Hansley, colored, near Felton, Del., objected to the young man who was paying at- tentions to his daughter Sarah, and threatened her with chastisement if she continued to re- ceive his visits. Sarah, who is avery bright mulatto, concluded to get rid of the old man, and she mixed Paris green with the molasses he ate on his buckwheat. The old man cannot recover. Sarah was lodged in jail, She admits her guilt, ae Stealing Pictures from Valuable Books. From the New York Sun. “I very much wish the habit of chewing gum would become obsolete,” said a down- town dealer in literary junk, “for no book dealer can look in peace at a customer who chews gum. The reason of this is that he can- not help fearing that the customer is a thief.” “The favorite trick of the picture thief—and some Peopes who are otherwise of good repute steal pictures—is to carry a thread of tho length of an octavo Page, under his tongue. Then, while the bookseller’s back is turned, he lays that wet string along the bound edge of some engraving in the boek in hand that pleases him, and straightway opens the book fifty leaves away. In a minute or so he can turn back to the engraving and it will tear out noiselessly and with little effort. “The dealers in old books lose hundreds of dollars in that way every year in this city.” No Christmas Presents Allowed. Every one of the 1,000 persons employed in the Adelaide silk mills, at Allentown, Pa., had contributed toward purchasing Christmas presents for the foremen and forewomen. Many of the articles had already been pur- chased when the eupermmienient: Louis Sole- liac, issued orders that any one detected in giving or receiving presents would be sum- marily dismissed. his uulooked-for order created great consternation and dissatisfaction, but tne dealers from whom the goods had been purchased willingly took them back to oblige eee ees A Passenger Train Ruked. As the Portland express from Boston was passing @ freight train on the Boston and Maine railroad near Andover, Mass., yesterday, @ heavy piece of timber became unfastened from one of the freight cars and struck the tront end of the rear car of the express.
