Ata later period, within the recollection of men now living, the naviga- tion interests became more diffused, and New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and other ports fm a region southerly shared with the northeast the benefits of an increasing ocean commerce in native ships manned by home-born sailors. From 1830 to 1840 the commerce of the United Btates increased at the rate of 60 per cent; in the next decade the growth was 75 per cent, sud 60 per centum more from 1860 to 1360. The distractions of the war diverted the energies of our people, and since the great conflict closed the national enterprise bas been directed into the ebannol of internal transportation. Now that these colossal plans of transcontinental communication have been substantially per- fected it is in senson to look again at the sea, especially when we discover that the percent age of American commerce carried in Ameri- ean ships in 1888 has shrunk to a little over 13 pet cent from 73 per cent thirty years ago. a Stanley’s work in Africa is of higher value the more we hear of it. It appears that among the things he has settled are these: The Coh- §0 traced from the sea to its head; discovery of the water-shed of the Nile and the Congo systems; almost absolute proof that Lake Vie- toria is the largest body of fresh water in the world; and that the ancient ‘Mountains of the Moon” have their equivalent name in the mod- ern Ruwenzore, the highest peak of which he estimatesto be 19,000 feet in altitude and which is entirely snow-capped for twelve bun- dred feet. It is not yet known what the future work in Africa will be of this most famous ex- plorer of the 19th century, but it is thought in London that he will accept the chieftainship of the East African company. In this there would be a chance for a conflict with the Ger- man government, involving finally the two countries of Germany and Great Britain.
