—~ * THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., SATURDAY. DECEMBER 14, 1889—-SIXTEEN PAGES,” R. WANAMAKER’S TREAT.” The Postmaster General Daughters Take a Look at + Hil Office Rooms, Postmaster General Wanamaker went over to Philadelphia today, where he will spend tomor- row. Before leaving he had a long conference with Senator Cameron and Judge Paxton of Philadelphia, Mr. Wanamaker daughters came to the department this morning with their father. He showed them his office and then stook them up stairs, where they inspected his “retreat,” as his private room upon the third floor of the department building is known. The retreat is very handsomely furnished with lace curtains and upholstered furniture, It consists of tworooms, The larger room has a desk in the center and is fitted up as an office. Con- nected by s doorway is a smaller room, which is divided by partitions, thus providing a place for toilet facitities, and also a tiny little oftice room, where there is one di and one chair. When the Postmaster General is at his desk the room is full. There is no space for anything else. His daughters were naturally much in- terested in the “retreat,” and especially in the cute little private office. Mr. Wanamaker does not pep ay retreat very much, but when he wants a of this kind he wants it badly. and for this reason he had these rooms fitted up for his use. CHESS EXTRAORDINARY. A startling discovery was made yesterday afternoon in house No. 1205G street north- west, owned by Mra, A. 8. Woodbury of No. 1309 Massachusetts avenue northwest. Mrs. Woodbary formerly lived in the house on G street and when she moved from there several weeks ago a “for rent” sign was placed on the | house and Cornelius Medilla,an old colored man, was put in charge of the premises, Several days ago Miss Addie Payne, who lives with Mrs. Woodbury, noticed that the windows of the vacant house were open and she notified Mra. Woodbury of the fact. The latter, how- ever, paid no attention to it because some painting had been done and she thought that | Medilia had opened the windows to air the house, Yesterday the young lady again noticed that the windows were open, and with a friend, Muss Lizzie Grinnell, sha went te she house to see if anything was wrong. When the door was opened Miss Payne was nearly over- powered by a horrible’ stench, but as she had gone there to investigate she made up her mind todosoand discover the cause of the un- | penne odor, She made = way through the ouse to the kitchen door and there A SICKENING sIGET was presented. Ona pallet made on the floor was the dead body of a colored man in an ad- vanced stage of decomposition, while poor old Medilla was lying on the floor in an apparently dying condition. Ihe news of the discovery soon drew # large crowd of people, and Dr. Ellyson of the emergency hospital’ was sent for, He found Medilla lying on his side. The side of his face next to the floor was ony swollen, showing that he had been in that posi tion for some days. The police were notified aud he was sent to the Freedman’s hospital. ‘The dead body of the other man was taken to the morgue, BO INFORMATION TO BE GOT FROM MEDILLA. Medilla was much better this morning when aSrag reporter saw him in the hospital. He told the reporterthat he did not know the doad man’s name, nor could he tell how long he had been in the house. He said he, himssif, was about fifty-seven years’ old, althouzh b's looks indicate that tue figures should be reversed. When asked by the reporter whether he had been assaulted he sad he bad not. ‘The dead man’s body had not been identified at noon today, The cause of his death and ie old men’s illnesa puzzles the physicians aud the police, Itis thought by some persons thatthe men had used opiates, The doctors are unable to assign any cause for the condition of the men except exhaustion, A VERY MYSTERIOUS CASE. Dr. Patterson, the coroner, viewed the body this morning and Deputy Coroner Schaeffer made the autopsy. Dr. Schaeffer said to a Stag reporter that the cage was a very mysteri- ous one. The fact that two men were found there leads to the belief that their condition was the result of a common cause, Whether it was gasses or not he was unable to say. The at man, he Bai evident! been dead at least five days, He had made a thorough ex- amination of the stomach, but did not tind the cause of death there, He said he was satistied that death was not caused by violence. The doctor removed the brain and will make an analysis of it later. —_—_—_.—__ WHY NOT OFFER A REWARD? An Official Thinks It Might iaioa | Information About Silcott. “I do not see,” said s Treasury official this morning toa Stax reporter, “why some steps have not been taken at the other end of the avenue toward the offering of a reward for the capture of Sileott. It seems to me that if the investigation committee would issue gen- eral notice that Silcott’s apprehension would be worth 5,000 or $10,000 to his captors they would have had some exceedingly valu- able information regarding his movements. It has been urged that Silcott is not a fugitive from justice, and that therefore it is impossible to apprehend him. It surely appears to me that it is a plain ease of common sense logic: ‘There @ sum of money missing, 80 is Silcott; there is not a possibility of a doubt that he kuows something ubout it. We need that man to carry on our investigations, whether he is guilty or not, Inshort, we need him just €10,000 worth.’ I would. warrant some tangible results in less than a week, for every policeman and a detective through- out the country would be on the alert,” THE TREASURY PRECAUTIONS. Mr. Huston’s Plan to Prevent the Rais- ing of Checks or Drafts. Treasurer Huston bas decided to add to the Precautions now in use in his office to prevent the changing of checks or drafts and has adopted a canceling number stamp, which cute from the paper on which the check is written, in a series of small round holes, the figures representing the amount to be drawn, preceded by the dollar mark. The machine is easily manipulated and the perforation of the check will not be an operation of any appreciable length of time, The punching will probably fall on the edge of the vignette. The treasurer said this morying to a Stan reporter: “Ido not know that this is absolutely neces- sary. There are some in the office who believe that it is needle at I take this ground: I use this punch in my own bank at home, and appreciate the fuct that it is an absolute safe- guard against raising a check. I do not want to place myself in a position to be asked if I have used all possible precautions against fraud, and then have to rey that in my opinion this was one that I had not used. It is said in the office that there has never been a case of a raised check being presented at the Treas- ury for payment. While that may be true it does not prove that such a thing is not a possibility, I want to make it utterly impossible. ‘The system will be put in operation on the Ist of January. At first it will be applied only to checks prepared at the Treasury department, but it will undoubtedly be extended very soon to all branches of the government, ‘The Indiana Reception. The reception of the Indiana republican club at the National Rifles’ hall, postponed from last Thursday, will be held on next Monday evening at the same place, A large assembly and many distinguished people are expected, A Nationalist Lecture. Prof. Daniel DeLeon of Columbia college will lecture at Grand Army hall tonight under the auspices of the Nationalist club, No. 1, of Washington.
