Condition of Lewis Johnson, Whose| Assoctatep Caanrties.—The: Skull Was Fractured by Wm. Hook. Lewis Johnson, the negro who received the murderous blow on the head with the seat of a coal cart, inthe handsof Wm. Hook, as pub- lished in yesterday's Stan, was resting easier this morning, although his condition is yet crit- ical, The physicians decided to perform an operation. but the patient's condition will not admit of it at present. Johnson is about twenty years old. The murderous attack occured near the Long bridge, where both negroes were at work unloading coal from a carinto the carts of which they were the drivers, Hook was fill- ing his cart when Johnson came up, and asking him if he was hungry, gave him a piece of bread and meat. Johnson then commenced chafiing Hook. “Look bere, Johnson,” said Hook, “I know what you'se going to say. You better keep quiet or I'll slap you in the mouth.” Hook an- ticipated a remark about his (Hook's) mothor anda man named Wallace. Sure enough the remark was made and Hook got down off the car, THE ENCOUNTER, Johnson, so Hook says, struck him with a stick, whereupon he (Hook) grabbed tho seat board of the cart and dealt Johnson a torritle blow on the front of the head, crushing the skull, Hook then ran away, leaving Johnson on the ground unconscious. ' The police patrol Wagon conveyed the wounded man to Freed- man’s hospital, where he now is, Yesterday the physicians reported that tho patient was in_a dying condition and the police made every effort to capture the alleged assailant. Police: man Levi Jones went out in citizens’ clothes and about noon he caught Hook in the trap he had setfor him. Hook admits the assault, but claims that the injared man assaulted him first, This morning the prisoner, Wm. Hook, was taken to the Police Court and Judge Miller committed him to jail to await the result of Johnson's injuries, ee THE HIGH SCHOOL, The Annex Building Completed, but the Furniture Still Lacking. The annex to the High school is completed and the rooms are now occupied by the pupils as far as the furniture on hana will permit. There has been some delay, however, in the receipt of casting for the desks which has pre- vented the use of some of the space available. All of the pupils have been brought into the building from the annex and given accommo- dations under the main roof, but the inability to use the full extent of space still makes it necessary to follow the half-day system, which now extends throughout the first and second year classes, As soon as the furniture is all received the school can be re-established on a whole-day basis, The battalion of cadets is drilling away ata great pace, but is ham- pered by inconveniences, The new armory in the basement of the annex, 80 feet long by 30 wide, is large enough to hold all the cadets, but it is utterly bare of furnishings. such as gun racks, cases, hooks and other equipments, ‘The boys have undertaken a project for raising the amount necessary to fit the room with racks, cases, &c. ‘They give a concert tonight in the exhibition hall of the school, in which some of the leaders in Washington musical circles will participate, The program includes the names of Paul Miersch, Ed. When the crash came they scattered, some of them jumping from the windows. Fortunately none of them were seriously hurt, but the caboose car was badly smashed and the front of the engine damaged. ee A Case Under the Pawnbrokers’ Law. in the Police Court yesterday afternoon Judge Miller heard the case of Isaac Steinem, who was charged with conducting the business of a pawnbroker without a license. The gav- ernment, through Prosecuting Attorney Armes. claimed that the defendant purchased articles with the understanding that the seller could repurchase within a specified time at an ad- vanced price. The proof, however, did not sustain the government's claim. Saige Miller said that if the proof had shown an understanding between the parties to the effect that the seller could repurchase his goods (it was a watch in this case) the de- fendant would be guilty under the charge, but as the proof failed to show such a state of facts the case had to be dismissed. Under the ruling of the court it will be almost impossible for any second-hand dealer to conduct the busi- ness of a pawnbroker aud successfully evade the new law, _—_—— Burglary at Sligo. Serious dissensions in the ranks of the manu- facturers who were to compose the barb-wire trust have broken up the “combine,” There were several points on which the manufactur- ers disagreed. One was that about half the men in the combine wanted to be president of the Federal steol company, by which title the barb-wire trust was to be known. Another wus the fact that the owners of some of the mills included in the combine wanted cash instead of stock for their plants. It was the purpose of the promoters of the trust to form two ra tions, one to control the manufacture of barb- wire and the other commercial wire, iu which was included wire nails and all varietivs of wire outside of the barbed species, The head- uarters of the trust was to be ir Chicago, and the capitalization of each corporation was to be between $8,000,000 and £10, ),000., Six Leather Factories Closed.
