GETTING READY FOR WORK: House Committees of Ways and Means and Appropriations Organized. The House committees on ways and means and on appropriations were organized today. Mr. Cannon, the chairman of the latter com- mittee, has demonstrated that he considers merit above politics, at least in the matter of the appointment of aclerk to his committee. He says he believes in turning out democrats when republicans can be found to fill the places made vacant, but that there is no one, he says, who could fill the place of Mr. Courts, and, therefore, he has reappointed him today. Mr. Cleves, the republican clerk of the Senate appropriations committee, and Mr. Courts, the democratic clerk of the House committee, he regards as two men whocould not be dispensed with, Mr. Courts was assistant clerk to the com- mittee under Mr. Stevens, wo served from 1865 until 1882. Mr. Stevens then retired and Mr. Courts was made clerk, He has served ever since in that capacity and is a perfect cyclopae- dia of fiscal affairs. Both republicans and democrats have the utmost confidence in him. SUBCOMMITTEES OF THE APPROPRIATIONS coM- MITTER. It was nearly 4 o'clock when the women reached the hotel, 6 detectives FOLLOWED THEM TO THEIR ROOM, and Mr. Raff said: “Good afternoon, Mrs. Thomas,” “You are mistaken, sir,” said one of them. “You are speaking to the wrong person.” They were both fairly loaded down with ds. They denied that they had ever been in Baltimore, but when closely questioned they admitted that they came over on the 9:40 train the night before, and one of them asked: “What of it?” “Where are you from?” questioned the officers. “It's none of your business,” answered one of them, ‘‘and we don’t intend to tell you.” WANTED TO BUY THE DETECTIVES OF! “What do you want to show us up for?” ono of them asked. ‘Here's two sealskin coats,” she said, “Each of you take one for your wife and we will leave the town.” They were then placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters, where one of the lice matrons searched them.
