The thanksgiving services were held in the Congregational church, other churches unit- ing, and an excellent sermon was preached by the pastor, the Rev. F, W. Tuckerman. Mr. H. B. Belpre, it may be’ in- structively remarked, is located in about the center longitudinally ot what was indicated on my atlas in my early school days as the great American desert and I venture the statement that probably, no other re; on the earth with as cheap cultivation produce as large yields of wheat as that western Kansas region will, which is from 40 to 50 bushels to the acre. He Wanted to Go to Heaven. Last, evening, while Sergeant Bryan of the fifth precinct was passing near 4th and G streets southeast, Ris attention was attracted to a man with a wooden leg, who was lying on the side- walk in a stupor. The officer picked him up and took him to the station, where it was dis- covered that he had swallowed laudanum, and arrangements were made for his removal to Providence hospital. He told the officer that his name was William Taylor and that he came from Fairfax county, Va. While in the station he remarked: “+1 want to go. “Go where?” asked Li feut. | Boteler. “To heaven,” he replied. He was subsequently removed to Providence hospital, although he was not thought to be in a dangerous condi ion. —- He Had a Cent in His Pocket. A colored youth named “Ike” Snowden, whose home is in East Washington among the brick yards, came down town last night with eleven cents in his pocket, He spent ten cents for a theater ticket and when the performance was over took a walk ‘around the block.” The light in Hattie Snow's window attracted him and he entered the cigar store and secreted himself behind the counter, Hattie found him there and had him arrested. Ike told Judge Miller this morning that he hada cent in his pocket, but was arrested before he had time to spend it for cigarettes. | Ninety days, The Maryland Republican Association. The annual sale of abandoned and unclaimed property in the hands of the police will take place Friday morning. The sale will differ from all previous sales as there will be but two revolvers offered under the hammer, There will be a number of razors sold, however. ‘Lhe pistols will be withdrawn from the sale, probubly, because a request will soon be made for the cnactmentof a liw by Congress to contis- cate and destroy the weapons taken from pris- oners. The catalogue for the sale has printed and ributed. It embraces male and female clothing, tools, cigars, ornaments, perfumes, umbrellas, One Solution of the Post Post Office Problem. To the Editor of Tue Evesixo Stan: ‘Tue Stan, as usual, hits the nail on the head in advocating a separate building for the city post office. Such a course would, however, be- fore long require the erection of two buildings —one for the city and one for the general Post Office department, for, as is well known, owing to the “hand to mouth” economy in providing wowed buildings, both the Post Office and the terior department buildings have long since failed to afford the necessary room for tie bus- iness, which, with the growth of the country, is bound to increase. The most economical as wellas the most sensible way out of the diffi- culty would seem to be to erect buildings of suflicient size to accommodate these depart- ments for years to come and turn the present general post office building over to the city post office, for which it is admirably suited, having wide and convenient entrances for vehicles, and, if need be, a partof the court yard’ could be covered with glass, Whatever space may not be needed could shelter the custom house, the local pension: agent, &c., the whole forming & convenient and ‘accessible plan for the transaction of local business with the general government, such as is the case in all other cities. Keeping the custom house in Georgetown, now that pretty much all the importers do business in Washington and most of the imports are by railroads to this city, is simply avsurd; it might as well be in Bladensburg because years ago there was shipping there. In view of the ex- tensive and expensive halls which the so- called Interior department building contains it might be more economical to turn it over ex- clusively to the patent office and concentrate all the rest and bigger portion of the business of the Interior department in a new building of adequate size, though in the end it would be cheapest by modifymg the plan to use the present department building for one of the smaller departments. It would make an ad- mirable Department of Justice or District building, in which case the entire Interior de- ent, exeepting the pension office, could ncentcated in the new ee hacoe The pen- sion a office force will in time be ee duced and will thus be easily accommodated in the same pI Hitherto all the projects for increased room for these departments contemplated ‘additions either in the form of additional stories or wings, Every architect knows that these build- ings are architecturally complete and that any such addition would simply ruin — - ——— Transfers of Real Estate. Concerning the public schools the District Commissioners in their annual report made the following remarks, which were inadvertently omitted from the copy furnished for publica- tion: “The public schools share a large part of public interest and attention, The Commissioners have given much timo and thought to this important interest. By the liberality of Congress most of the thirty-seven thousand school children who Present them- selves for instruction are provided with separate seats, clean, well-ventilated, well- furnished, commodious school rooms. No child need go more than a few squares to reach @ piace of instruction. A course of in- struction and discipline, approved by experi- ence and most advanced thought, is offered alike to all without distinction of color or com dition, In the day schools there were taught during the past year 35,764 children, 22,760 ot whom were white and 13,004 were colored. In the night schools ) persons were taught, of whom 1,192 were white and 1,008 colored. 37,964 persons were. therefore, enrolled in all kinds of schools. The Commissioners belie the work was well done. In our visits to the schools we have seen unmistakable evidences of system, cultivation and refinement. The quiet, cheerful industry everywhere found was guaranty of contentment and success. “The Commissioners believe that no other de- partment of our District government shoukt be guarded more carefully or provided for more liberally. We hope that Congress will con- tinne the same wise, intelligent and liberal Policy that has characterized ite acts during the past ten years.” GEORG TOWN. Derata or Mus. A long letter from Stanley to a friend, dated | September, 1888, was published yesterday im London, It records his discoveries and re= counts the difficulties anticipated on his home- ward journey. ‘There is an account of the hos- tility of the king of the Kalburega, who stripped Casati and turned him adrift to perish, He was fortunately found and rescued by Emin, Another letter gives # full account of his #o= journ with Emin, The Heraid correspondent telegraphs from Bassau under date of November 29: “Ihave just met Henry M. Stanley, Emin Pasha, Casati, Lieut. Stairs, Mr, Jephson, Dr. Parke, Nelson and Lonny, and 560 men, women and children. I have found Stanley looking excecdingly hearty, He wears a Prussian cap, linen breeches, and canvas shoes. “I presented him with the American flag with which I was intrusted, and it is now flying from Mr. Stanley's tent. “The great explorer’s hair is quite white and his mustache is iron gray. Emin Pasha isa | slight, dark man, He wears spectacles. Inw | short conversation which I bad with him he | told me he did not wish any honors for what | he had done. He simply desired to be employed again in the khedive's service. I bave given Capt. All the other Europeans are well, “We shall all proceed toward the const the day after tomorrow. Stanley, Emin and Casiti were entertained at dinner last night in this camp by Baron Gravenreath. Speeches were made by the baron and by Stanley. The baron com- plimented Stanley, Emin and their companions on their march from central Africa, Stanicy re= sponded and praised German enterprise aud ite civilizing abilities.” A dispatch from Cairo states that the Egyp- tian government has received a divpatch trom Zauzibar signed Emin Pasha. requesting that a vessel be placed at his disposal at Zanzibar. All went well until the state line was reached, when, in | a collision with # freight train, oue elk and one moose were killed and three deer escaped to the woods. Eight deer, three antelopes and one mvose died afterward. Parnell Resting Only. Rev. Dr, Reilly and Col. John Atkinson, whe left Detroit on October 14, arrived home from England yesterday morning. They say that both in England and Ireland the outlook for the Irish cause is very favorable. Dr. Reilly bears messages from President Parnell of the Trish league to President Fitzgerald of the American league, which will probably be given to the press in a few days, Col. Atkinson dis- credits the rumors that Mr. Parnell is missing under peculiar circumstances and says he saw letters from Parnell, written on November 22, from a small t town at ‘which he was s resting.
