A union meeting of the members of the five councils of the Royal Arcanum of the District Was held last evening at the hall, 923 F street northwest. Atthe close of the meeting refreshments were served at Edel's, The funeral of Mr. Frank MacArthur, who Met his death by jumping from the cougres- sional limited Sunday evenmg, will take place feom the residence of his father, ex-Justice Arthur MacArthur. 1201 N street northwest, tomorrow afternoon, Judge Montgomery yesterday discharged the Jurors of the Circuit Court not engaged in the THE ZOOLOGICAL PARK. The Property to be Acquired and What it will Cost. By agreement with some of the owners of the Property, which has been approved by Presi- dent Harrison, the zoological park commission will acquire the title to certain pieces of prop- erty along Rock creek for use asa zoological park. These pieces of property, together with the names of the owners and the prices paid, are as follows: Miss A. E. J. Evans, 90.050 acres at $1,000 per acre and 4 acres at 31,200 per acre, total $94,860; H. D. Walbridge, 14.450 acres for $14,450: Woodley park, H. P. Wagga- man and others, owners, 5.103 acres donated and 2.350 acres for $5,865; Heury C. Holt, 13.360 acres for $40,000; Mrs. M. Caney, 1.440 acres for $3,000; Mrs. E. L. Dunn ctal., .392 acres for $170.76. The following pieces of propery must be acquired by condemnation. ‘The valuations made by the commission are approved by the President as follows: Pacificus Ord, 24.570 acres, $9,828: part of colured cemetery, 1.700 acres, for $3,000; J. P. Klingle, 6.180 acres, $4.94; E. E. Hayden, .670 acres, $400; Me- Pherson & Finley, .315 acres, 2200. There is, besides, the ground in the Quarry road, which is a public tract, and the stream bed, owner unknown, to be acquired. ‘The total amount of land obtained from the owners and to be acquired is 166.486 acres at a total cost of $177,125.76. The members of the commission are gratified with the liberal treat- | ment received at the hands of some of the | large property owners and are of the opinion that the prices at which the land was obtained are not only reasonable, but less than a private individual could have obtained. The commis- sion will at once institute suit in the courts for the condemnation of the land whose owners re- fuse to accept the terms offered, and will ask that three appraisers be appointed at once to determine the value of the land. PAY OF PER DIEM EMPLOYES. A Question of Allowing Them Wages Waile Absent on Account of Sickness or Bad Weather, Some time since, as hereinbefore stated in | Tue Star, a controversy arose between the | District Commissioners and the first controller | for work not actuaily performed; that is the Payment of wages to ths class of employes when absent from work either on account of sickness or bad weather. In the engincer department of the District per diem employes who it was considered | 1 were ordered to report at the District buildings in bad weather. ‘This re- porting for duty was considered as entit!ing them to pay. No provision was made, how- ever, for payments of employes abseut on ac- count of illness, A case of this kind sterday.
