Lumber Men Talk it Over and Will See the Railroad oad Company. The almost entire stopp stoppage of the freight delivery of lumber by both roads running into the city has been a serious matter to the many local lumber dealers, and the complaints and denunciations have been loud and many. A number of the prominent merchants have been recently agitating the starting of a new road into the city or the revival of the river trade by the formation of a steamship company. THE MEETING LAST NIGHT. The lumber dealers met last night at the store of Messrs. Barber & Ross at 911 Pennsyl- vania avenue to express their opinions of rail- toads in general and of roads that deliberately refuse to deliver freight in particular. Most of the prominent lumber dealers of the city were nt. Mr. R. H. Willett presided, with W. A. |. Chureh acting as secretary. Among others present were Thos. W. Smith, Henry L. Biscoe, Thos. B. Stephenson, Samuel Ross, F. A. Belt, 8. H. Wimsatt and Wm. Wheatley. ‘THE SPEECHES. Speeches were made by nearly all the gentle- men, and the impression seemed to be that the roads were making no effort to accomodate the ta, but were deliberately neglecting freight interests of the city. Mr. Church | said that when 200 cars came in daily only 100 were unloaded, the companies making no effort to get the cars unloaded. Mr. Wimsatt thought the roads would never be satisfled until they were allowed to have their run on property not ing tothem. He further stated that the Pennsylvania company had been offered free use of ground to facilitate their lumber trade, but bad refused even to put in the less — should be Tome for. Biscoe said that the claim was made b; Superintendent Carter of the Baltimore and Potomac road that the efforts of the railroad to add to its facilities were not properly appreci- ated, and didi not receive proper support from the business men. The state is armed like acamp and the of a repabiionn state convention was the signal for the pur- chase and distribution of thousands of repeat- ing rifles by the democrate.
