Carlisle Nominated for Speaker and Tariff Reform Resolutions Adopted. The democrats of the Fifty-first Congress held a caucus in the hall of the House this morning and nominated ex-Speaker Carlisle and the old officers, No nomination was made for chapiain, but the democrats will vote for Rev. Dr. Milburn, whose name will be presented by some republican, with the aim to defeat the caucus nominee of the republicans. ‘MR, CARLISLE UNANIMOUSLY NOMINATED FOR SPEAKER, Mr. Carlisle was put in nomination by Mr. McCreary of Kentucky, who made a short ad- dress, in which he spoke of Mr. Carlisle as “a gallant and gifted, a tried and true democrat, whose life has been Ny ator for intellectual efforts and for knightly devotion to duty—who asa champion of the federal Constitution and as an advocate of honest, economical, just government has ever upheld true democratic principles with unswerving fidelity and un- faltering confidence. * * * He has been courageous, careful and conservative asa Con- essman; eloquent, able and logical as a de- ater, and he has discharged the arduous and responsible duties of Speaker with a compre- hensive statemanship, a fervid patriotism and an unchanging fairness and wisdom never ex- celled by any preceding Speaker of the House of Representatives, The nominations were unanimous, TARIFF REFORM RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED. Mr. Scott Wike of Illinois introduced the fol- lowing resolution, which was adopted unani- mousiy: Resolved, That we, the democratic members of the House of Representatives of the Fifty- first Congress, at the beginning of its first ses- sion, hereby send greeting to the people of the country the assurance of our continued confi- dence and devotion to the principles of tariff reform as embraced in President Cleveland's message to the last Congress upon that sub- ject, and in the platform of principles adopted by the last democratic national convention at St. Louis; and that we hail with delight the emphatic approval of those principles by the People as expressed at the polls in the recent elections, and we pledge them to renew and continue in Congress the contest for areduc- tion of war taxes,so ably begun and prosecuted in former Congresses by our Representatives and Senators. Mr, Randall was not present at the caucus, Major Carson on the House Officers. Major Carson's dispatch to the Philadelphia Ledger on the House organization closes with this paragraph: “The organization as it will be represented in the officers nominated yesterday will be a strong one. Mr. Reed is well equipped at every oint for the difficult duties that are before im. His elevation to the chair will be a de- cided loss to the republicans on the floor, as he was a skillful and audacious leader and an in- genious tactician. Mr. McPherson is not only © man of high character and ability but has a thorough knowledge of the requirements of the clerk's office, derived from eight years of previous service in it, that will be of special value to the republicans at this time, when their majority is less than the fingers of one’s hands.” It is evident that an “irresponsible news- paper man” can efully accept defeat as well as make a bold and manly fight. Gen. Raum’s Investment. Commissioner of Pensions Raum has recently purchased what is known as the Pearson plaster (gypsum) banks in Smyth county, southwestern Virginia, about six miles from Saltville. The price paid was $30.00, which is said to be a very reasonable figure for so valuable a property. Struck and Killed by the Locomotive. J. W. Burkholder, a brakeman on shifting engine No. 45 of the Baltimore and Ohio rail- road, was struck and accidentally killed this morning about 9:30 oclock by engine No. 716, from Hagerstown. The ident occured at the New York avenue yard. Deceased came from Baltimore some time ago to accept @ position on the road, He was about forty years of age, 5 feet 8 inches in height and weighed about 130 pounds, His body was taken to the morgue, while the railroad offi- cials set about to find his friends. Those who saw the accident say that the engineer of the engine whieh did the fatal work was in no way to blame, he blew his whistle repeatedly and could not possibly have stopped the engine. sa ea edi A Wife’s Suit for Divorce. This morning in the Court in General Term Judge James delivered the opinion of the court in the ease of Abbott agt. Smith, sustaining the demurrer to the pleas of defendant This is a law case on action for rent, in which the agreement was thata royalty should be paid on the amount of soap stone taken out, The pleas were that there was no merchantuble soap stone there and a want of consideration. ‘Lhe court holds that the defendant leased the eighteen acres and is liable, and therefore sus- tains the demurrer to the plea. gens sad For the Eye of the Finder. To the Editor of THe EVENING Stan: Thos. Johnson, a poor colored man in the District service, lost $10 (two €5s)on Wednes- day last in the office of the collector of the Dis- trict, A gentleman reported on that day to the | collector that he had found $10 and to send the owner to him, But, unfortunately, his name and residence is nut known to the office. John- son advertised his loss, but has had no reply. I write this in the hope that whoever the | finder wes he may read this and come to the | District building to inquire about the matter, The $10 was just one-fourth of the man’s entire pay.
