THE MINISTER DOUGLASS PRESENTED. A Dramatic Scene, FullyAppreciated All Present. . The presentation of Minister Douglass to the Haytian gqvernment took place November 14. A New York Sun correspondent was present aud describes the event picturesquely. Mr. Douglass was attended by the United States vice consul, Dr. Terres; Mr. E. D, Bassett, Mr. Richard -T. Crane, s representative of the American colony, and the Rev. A. Battiste, long associated with the United States legation. Upon their arrival at the palace the long lines of soldiers outside and inside the gates pre- sented arms, the band struck up “The Star Spangled Banner” (and a most excellent band it ), while the aids-de-camp of his excellency, in their gorgeous uniform of red trousers, blue coats and no lack of gold but- tous and military decorations, were prompt in escoriing the party through the crowded vestibule to the audience chamber, where the president stood waiting to receive them, sur- his cabinet, several of his generals ng citizens of Port-au-Prince. The portiere behind the president was a pecive background for a scene in which eut leaders of the African race were so prominent. With the towering form of the old Haytian veteran, Gen. Mompoint, on his right and the white head of Frederick Douglass before him. President Hyppolite appeared less in size than he really is. He is buta few years the junior of Mr. Dougiass and is re- markably well preserved in appearance, his quiet dignity and cautions reservanever failing to impress strangers. while there is that in his kindly face and twinkling eye explaining his popularity, CITY AND DISTRICT. & Tur Evesixo Stan is everywhere recog- nized and admitted to be, in every quality, the leading and favorite newspaper of the National Capital, alike in the counting-room, the work- shop, and the family circle, Pretty much everybody in the District reads it regularly, It is therefore much the best advertising medium in the city; and, in proportion to circulation tts advertising rates ure aiso much the cheapest. FOOT BALL IN THE MUD. The District Championship Won by the Georgetown College Team. The Georgetown college foot ball team de- feated the Duponts yesterday afternoon by a score of 2 to 0, thus winning the foot ball cham- pionship of the District. About 1,500 specta- tors were present, and they had good reason to be satisfied with the game as played by the local teams, The heavy rains of Wednesday night had made the grounds a sea of mud, but this had no effect on the canvas-clad players, who rolied and tumbled in it as though it were their native element. The game began promptly o'clock amid the deafening cheers of the supporters of either team, Sam King, Princeton ‘83, the sprinter of the Colum- bia athletic club, was chosen referee. The game was w yed throughout and was won THE ADDRESSES, Following the introduction of the party by M. Firmin, the minister of foreign affairs, Mr. Douglass read his address, a short, terse ex- pression of the feelings of the United States toward Hayti. In closing Mr. Douglass said: “My country has conferred upon me many marks of its favor; but in view of the heroic devotion to liberty and independence exem- litied by your brave countrymen ix the darkest nours of their history, I can say. in ail sincer- ity, that I bave received at the hands of my government no honor that I prize more highly Princ mm team invented and which they have always used with such effect. Mr. Walworth wanted a room jjoining, but this could not be given and he took room 10, His friends were given rooms near by. They waited patiently until 8 o'clock in the morning when a call came from room 6 for a beli-boy. One came, and as the door opened to admit him Mr. Walworth and his friends rushed in and found Mrs. Walworth there. The husband and his witnesses then re- tired, and he went immediately to the office of Gerald G. Riordan, a lawyer, and secured that gentleman's assistance in getting out a warrant for the arrest of Verner. They went to Justice Coffey’s office and swore out a warrant for dis- orderly conduct, the only charge which c nsed quickly. The couple had left the city fore the oficer found them. Fredericksen Was the Author of a Big Smash-Up in Denmark. Prof. Anderson of the university of Wiscon- sin and late minister to Denmark knew Prof. Fredericksen who is charged with gigantic swindles in the west, “He in the most prominent political and s circles of the Danish capital,” says Prof. Anderson, ‘‘a bril- liant scholar, author of several important works on political economy, and was, I think, a member of the Danish parliament for about sixteen years, His wife is the daughter of Bishop Monrad, formerly prime minister of Denmark, and the connections of his family placed them among the social and political leaders of the kingdom. He was largely inter- ested in businese enterprises in Denmark, and ended ina general smash-up similar, in some respects, to that he is at present mixed up in, although Ido not think there was anything criminal connected with the former. He fled the country, but could have returned at any time had he seen fit.” Prof. Anderson says that he entertained sus- picions as to th business as much as @ yeer ago, and was told in Denmark to look out for him as the reports irom America regarding him were bad. MANY SCANDINAVIAN VICTIMS. Fredericksen & Co, dida thriving business among the large Scandinavian populace of the west. They had local agents and state agents, It is known that they found many purchase that, with hardly an exception, much difficulty was experienced by these in getting deeds after ae final payments were made and several who ntly made final payments havereceived no ds, A brisk investigation is now on foot to certain whether deeds given are fradulentor ae ee Silver Men and the Speakership.
