23. 1889—TWELVE PAGES. ee eae NS Ne Se eR eae cert meen elem Deke re ll trea A STATUE OF LA SALLE, It is Unveiled at the Dedication of St. John’s College. Despite the rainy and disagreeable weather yesterday afternoon there was a large audience present at St. John’s college to witness the dedication of the college and the unveiling of the statue of St. John the Baptist de La Salle, Cardinal Gibbons, who came over from Balti- more in the morning to preside at the cere- monies, was met at the depot by Brother Tobias, director of the institution, and acom- mittee of the alumni and escorted to the col- lege building on Vermont avenue, The front ofthe building was handsomely draped with fiags and a large platform had been erected around the entrance, But the rain prevented most of the outdoor proceedings and the large lecture room was used instead. THE EXERCISES were opened by the vesting of the curdinal and clergy in the chapel which was followed by a brief prayer on the platform. Then a proces- sion with the cardinal at the head marched around the building singing the miserere and blessing the edifice. After a brief prayer aad the chanting of the litany from the piat- form prayers were offered in the chapel and the interior of the building was blessed. The audience then gathered in the main lecture room to listen to Dr. Chapelle’s discourse on La Salle, A dais was erected at one end and it were seated Cardinal Gibbous, who had the chair of honor, Father Clark of Gonzaga college aud Dr. Chapelle. THE STATUE OF LA SALLE. Dr. Chapelle made an eloquent address, in which he spoke of the necessity of education for the masses, and spoke very highly of La Salle, who was the apostle of popular educa- tion during the seventeenth century, and whom Dr. Chapelle regarded as one of the greatest men that ever lived. At the close of his ad- dress the statue was unveiled. It is of marble and stands in a large niche in the front of the building. It represents La Salle as a teacher, and is a great addition to the art works of the city. During the ceremonies Cardinal Gibbons did not deliver an address, as bad been ex- ted, but at the conclusion of Dr. Chapelle’s speech be held a reception, at whieh ali those present had an opvortunity of meeting him. pt. seathersns. Ineed not say to you how highly it is appreciated by every member thereof, accompanied as it is by just tribute to their fidelity to duty and an expression of our interest in their welfare. Last night a notice was read to the police- men going on duts to look out for May Wolf, described as a white girl “twenty years old. 5 feet 8 inches high, medium build, wew blue dress and black coat trimmed with blue velvet.” Miss Wolf, whose parents reside on the Biadensburg road. lived with Mr. Grosner’s family at 455 M street northwest, and on Wed- nesday Jast was dismissed in consequence of her condition, and in the evening took her trunk away, ax alsoa bundle of clothing, and on the following day her trunk was delivered at her father’s house with a letter in which she bade the family good bye and stated that she had concluded to take poison or drown herself. She last seen Thursday evenigg at 9th street and Rhode Island avenue. The police and a young mar named Davis are searching for her. They do not believe she has commit- ted suicide. epi Should be Taken Out of Politics. To the Editorof Tux EvExixe Star: I have read with much interest your edi- torial on the probable appointment of ex-Sen- ator Bruce to the recordership. The position You take as toasalaried official is the one I took when I was recorder. Twice I petitioned Congress to make the office like that of the clerk of the court, so as to take it out of poli- ties, and to let the surplus go into the treasury of the District. Having done this when I was in office I am surely justified in advocating it now. It is the ouly way to control this purely local office. 8. Worry. Nov. 22. 1889, oops At Avctiox.— Rateliffe.
