Her dress was then blaz- and he grabbed her and attempted to ex- tinguish the flames with his hands. Just at that time one of Kingsley’s milk wagons was | standing in front of the door. The driver was on his way to Walsh's door with a can of milk, and when he saw the woman he threw the con- tents of the can on her, which, it is thought, was the meansof SAVING HER LIFE. It takes a lot of furniture to fit out the eapi- tol. Itis a pretty big building to furnish with tables and chairs, carpets and rugs, desks, book cases, wash stands and what not, without tak- ing into account the articles of ornamentation. There are no hundred attics in the country that could furnish, ina combined effort, as much rubbish as is stowed away in that building, some lying away in dark holes and some serv- ing still as furniture. There are, of course, some articles of furniture that are made valu- able by age and historic association. There are the desks at which our great men of the early days wrote and the chairs they occupied, and there are rare old pieces of mahogany that are yaluable, independent of their associations, but what an auction sale it would make to sell li the ramshackle old furniture thereabout. It is proposed to recommend to Congress this session to have such a sale and to make an ap- propriation to refurnish all the House side, where the furnitnre is in the worst state of dilapidation. There has been very little new | furniture bought for that wing of the capitol since it was first furnished in 1862. At that | time an appropriation of $80,000 was first made | for the object, and that being found not pape ie $50,000 more was given. In all it cost $130, to furnish that wing alone. PROPOSED APPROPRIATION OF A QUARTER OF A MILLION, During recent years it has been the habit of Congress to appropriate $10,000 a year to keep this furniture in repair and to buy such articles as were absolutely necessary. With that sum | it has been found to be impossible to give all the furniture that has been needed and keep the old stuff mended up. It is proposed now toask for an appropriatson of about £250,000 to completely refurnish that wing and finish the frescoing that was started and dropped a number of years ago, The only place on the House side now where ;there is any pretense of elegance is in the Speaker’ 's lobby, and there the furniture’s chief beauty lies in its appear- ance of age. On the Senate side there are sev- eral rooms that are quite richly furnished, but there they have less space to fill and the wear and tear is not as gre¢ The ladies’ waiting room, where visitors sit while their cards are on the way to the Senators, is handsomely fur- nished, and the Vice President's room, the marble reception room and the room which is occupied vy the President at such time as he Reepens to visit the capitol are quite elaborate eir furniture and adornment, THE COURTS.
