BASE BALL CONTRACTS. Those So Far Signed for 1890—Players Deserting the Brotherhood. President Young of the National base ball Jeagne hax announced the following contracts for 1390: L. Viau with Cincinnati, A. Schell- hasse with Boston, T. D. Vickery. E. D. Burke, D. Anderson, E. H. Decker aud Ed Mayer with Philadelphia, Thomas Nagle and J. J. Cooney with Chicago, Frederick Root and William Wilson with Pittsburg. E. E. Smith with Kan- eas City, and P. F. Jones and John Reenan with Louisville. Released from reservation——By Omaha, Thos. Nagle and J. J. Cooney; by Washington, A. A. Irwin. The contracts of Gleason, Clements and dcriver with the Philadelphia legue cltb have also been received by Mr. Young and the belief is that Clarkson and Ganzel have signed with Boston and Whitney and Hattield with New York. It is expected that Giasscock, Denny, Boyle and Rusie will soon sign with Indinnap- olis. It would thus seem that « break has begun from the ranks of the brotherhood. Ball players are essentially like seeep—where one goes many others are sure to follow—and it would not be surprising to see a general deser- tion by the more prudent players betore long. Sam Thompson and Sidney Farrar have signed Brotherhood contracts. ae Transfers of Real ‘Estate. Deeds in fee have been filed as follows: Harrison Crook to Josiah P. Nutting, pt. 19. sq. 265; $2.500. Frevertck, Mp., November 19. Thomas Weekly of near Emmitsburg. this county, was the victim a few days ago of a serious accident. With a purty of companions be was testing skill by firing at a mark with AUTUMN FLOODS. Rallroa® Bridges Gone and Travel Stopped Over a Wide Territory. The recent rains have caused heavy floods in New York and Pennsylvania, The Chemung river has overflowed its banks and caused great damage. No trains passed through Elmira eastward yesterday. A train started out at 1:30 p.m. westward, but proceeded only about four miles out of the city when it ran into about five feet of water and bad toreturn. The Tioga division of the Erie is almost entirely wrecked, many of the bridges have been carried away and the track is washed out for two or three miles at a stretch. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western trains are also stalled here, be- cause of a washout near Corning. The river has been rising very oe dl and last evening was within five feet of the mark reached at the June flood and still rising at the rate of four- teen inches an hour. Frank Darmsted, a farmer, living about three miles south of Eimira, started out across the fields in a boat after some cattle this after- noon, when he was caught in the current of Seeley creek, his boat was capsized and he was curried out — the raging: torrent. His body has not yet been recovere Traffic has been entirely suspended on the Northern Central railroad north of Williams- port, Pa., all the bridges being heavily loaded down with cars to keep them trom floating off. The Reading road is adopting the same tactics with a number of its bridges south of that point. Railroad communication was entirely interrupted last night. Five bridges on the Northern Central railway were carried off dur- ing the day and a portion of the trestling of the Montgomery bridge has gone, All trains were last night abandoned on the Philadel, and Erie. On the Keadiug the bridge: at Muney and West Milton have broken and on that road no trains can run from below West Milton. At latest accounts from Clearfield the water was four feet and was at astand still, It will probably not go higher than eighteen feet at Williamsport, The Market street bridge, in Williamsport, was swept away at 11:20 last night, thereby de- stroying communication with the south side. ‘The river began to overflow its banks, and the fear is expressed that a portion of the city will be inundated. The flood in the Bald Eagle valley is reported to be almost as great as on June¢ 1. At 11:30 the river at Williamsport was was 18 feet high. Lumbermenare not express- ing any alarm, est Chester is flooded. In some places the water is half way up to the second floor of the houses and in hundreds of houses the first floor is covered. —— ———_———— UP THE YUKON. First News of the Party to Survey the Alaskan Boundary. A special dispatch from St. Louis to the New York Sun says the first news in months of the government expedition for the survey of the boundary betweeu Alaska and Canada reached that city yesterday, It came in a letter to Pat- rick McGrath, father of John E. McGrath, one of the chiefs of the exploring party. Thatpart of the expedition which Mr. McGrath com- mands has now navigated the Yukon river further than any steamer ever went before, and will during the winter travel through an unexplored land. The Turner party has al- ready pierced into an unexplored part of the country. Mr. McGrath writes: “We have been steaming up the Yukon for eleven days and are now 200 miles beyond that point on the river, which is half way between St. Michael's and where I expect togo. We are making on an average tive miles per hour. This is_a great rive: ar its mouth it is al- most 25 miles wide, taking in the various cha. nels through which it reaches thesea, It much resemblez the issippi. Our boat is small and we are compelled tostop frequently for wood, much of which we are compelied to cut. Fish and game are so_ plentiful that we have tired of ducks, geese andsalmon. It is dificult to believe that this is an arctic land when you observe the Juxuriaut forests, the green grass, the flowers and mark how warm the days are, But dig down ten inches anywhere and you will find the ground trozen hard. We reached Fort Yukon on July 2 and sepa- rated, Turner and iis party went up the Por- cupine river and lam muking my way slowly up to the boundary. Turner is the first man tu take a steamer up the Porcupine. The river ig a regular mountainous stream, rising with every rain and falling immediately afterward, Turner struck it ata low stage and progressed but 40 miles. FortYukon is but a name now. There is not astick of one of its houses left, The English used to think it belonged to them, but a survey showed it was 25 miles with- in our territory, and they had to move out, As there was no business to warrant occupa- ion, the houses of the Hudson Bay company were allowed to go to ruin, Moose are plerti- tand cheap, but peopl» cat anything they can get up here which will not poison them, This letter was mailed on August 19.
