7" THE EVENING STAR: THE WORLD OF SOCIETY. The Season’s Gayeties—Personal Notes of Interest. Mrs. Morton, wife of the Vice President, and who is at present at the Shoreham, spends her mornings at their new res on Seott circle overseeing and directing the concluding ar- rangement of the finishings and the ‘urnish- ings. Lastevening Mrs. Morton's mother ar- rived at the Shoreham and refused herself to all callers in order to be with her daughter in ‘the first hours of her stay. ‘Mrs. Gen. Myer and daughters have returned to the city and are at ir home on I street and Farragut square, Mr. and Mrs. George 8. Fraser of New York, who made so many friends here last seaso1 have returned to the city and are again settled for the winter in Mra, McCaila’s pretty house on Wth street, where they lived last winter. Miss Eustis and Miss Lulie Eustis, the latter being the cranddaughter of the late Wm. W. Corcorat,, have couciuded their travels abroad for the time and are expected to return here s00n to occupy the house of the late million- aire philanthropist which has stood untenanted for the two years succeeding his death. Miss Eustis and her piece will uot go into general Society, but wili see their friends quietly. Ex-Postmaster General Don M. Dickinson has recovered from his recent illness and is at | seer in the city prosecuting a suit before the preme Court. . Dickinson bas not yet recovered bis — Lg Ne Los is sae good progress in that direction. He is gradually Fevaming his law practice and will be im the city during the week, Mr. and Mrs. O. Hoffman Burrows and Miss Burrows will be warmly welcomed on their re- turn to the city, from which they have been absent two years. Mr. and Mrs. Burrows are numbered among the most delightful hoste and hostesses of the winter residents of the capital, ‘They will arrive here early in the new year. ‘Miss Alisan Wilson is back in the city from spending a long season at her old home in LKeuusylvunia, aud will spend the winter with her brother, Mr. Thomas Wilson of Connecticut avenue. ‘The Swiss minister, Mr. Dr. A. de Claperede, is in the city and is at No. 2014 Hillyer place for the season. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Holliday are back from New York, where they bave a house and where they have "been spending the autumn, and are in their N street home, No. 1814. Mrs. Charles Gibson will spend the month of December with ber daughter in Louisville, Ky. At the beginning of the year she will join her husband, Representative Gibson, here, and they will be for the winter at the Shoreham. Pah Wanamaker is in the city for a few days, the time very quietly and’ very rene ting the completion of the decora- tions and improvements in the house on I street, where she expects to spend the winter, Mrs. Wanamaker is not accessible to callers, as the object of her visit isto give her attention to the furnishing of the house. Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Saunders, Mrs. and Miss Sayles, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. C. Townsend, Judge and Mra. Lawrence Weldon, Mr. and Mra. W. 8. Pitkin, Capt. and Mrs. MeNally and Mrs. E. B. Erskine of Boston, are im the city wud are located at the Hamilton house for the seeson. A number of Georgetown ladies, finding it im- practicable to hold but one reception day for that entire end of the city, are endeavoring to establish a “Heights day,” having P street as the boundary line. To this end a majority of those residing on 3ist street, Q and U or “Koad street.” have decided upon Thursday as their “day at home” for the coming winter. Mr. and Mrs. Richerd H. Pillsbury of Balti- more have issued invitations for the marri of their daughter Bianche to Rev. J. Wrigl Norris, to take place Wednesday, pli ag at Mt. Lebanon church, in Baltimore. Miss Pillsbary is well known in this city. Mr. Benjamin F. Gettings of Adams’ express office, this city, left for Parkersburg, W.Va., on Monday last, where he will be united in the bonds of matrimony this evening to Miss Lucy Neal, a cousin ot ex-Cougressman Neal of Ohio. Mr. Garrot Crampton of the firm of Cropley, Boteler & Crampton. Georgetown, D.C,, was married to Miss Sophie Claggett yesterday morning at St. Mark’a church, Peteraville, Frederick county, Md. After the ceremony the couple left for a trip north and upon their return will re- side in Georgetown. Edison in Honor There—Speaking Let- ters Sent by Mail. Nr. T. B. Connery, forme-ly charge d'affaires of the United States to Mexico, arrived here this morning from Mexico. where he made a contract with the government of that country Telative to the introduction of Edison's phono- graph and the placing of th .. machines in the post offices of the neighboring republic to be used as speaking letters sent through the mails like ordinary postal matter. This is a novel idea, aud much interest was felt in Mexico as to the result of this new method of communi- cation by mail. A Victim of the Dredgers Makes His Escape and Reaches This City. It is yet early in the oyster season, but not too early for the usual complaints of ill treat- ment of the men employed as dredgera, Sev- eral bruised and half-starved victims have al- ready appeared in Baltimore, Norfolk and other places, but the first of the season here made his appearance yesterday.
