Charlie Cavens and Andrew Johnson, young colored men, engaged in a fight in a house in Springmann’s alley in South Washington last night, which was interrupted by Policeman Hatton, and Caven was locked up. He claimed that he paid rent for the house gnd provided for Rose Miller. Johnson, he said, visited Rose. During the row Cavens assaulted Rose and threw a mug at Johnson. The mismle missed Johnson and struck an old woman named Rose Thompson on the head, fracturing | 5 skull, The injured woman was attended by Dr. Winters, who found her in a critical condition. Cavens was taken to the Police Coart this morning and fined @5 for assaulting the woman. The charge against him for strix- ing the old woman was contin inued. “THE SEVEN TR. IN TRAVELERS.” Adventures of a » Gang of Youthful Negro Thieves from This City. “Si character” was the charge on the sixth police station blotter this morning opposite the entry, “Charles Brooks, colored seventeen years.” There. was no explanation on the blotter, but although ouly seventeen years old Brooks has made an unenvinbie record He started his criminal life by being arrested on a trifling charge, for which he was sent to tke work house. There he met older and hard- ened criminals. He learned something from them that prepared him to enter the “‘pro- fession.” He served his time there and when released he managed to remain outside prison walis for some months, but finally he was CAUGHT AGAIN. It was apparent to the court that Brooks in- tended to live the life of acriminal, and the judge attempted to change the course of the lad’s life and sent him to the reform school. He was then under fourteen years old. He behaved himself well.and after remaining there eighteen months he was discharged “on honor.” This training did not have the desired effect, and when he got out he fell in with his old companions and became worse than ever. s TING OUT TO SEE THE COUNTRY. With six companions he started out to see the country. They called themselves the “Seven travelers.” They were not fond of walking and so they usually stole rides on “‘freights. According to Brooks’ statement they were sworn to secrecy and carried pistols to kill any one who attempted to — them. They went as far as Martinsburg, and spent several days in that vicinity, reigns ina barn. The people in that section would not tolerate them and being unable to obtain food they planned A TRAIN ROBBERY, One afternoon in the broad daylight the members of the gang went to the woods some distance from Martinsburg. Six of them se- ereted themselves im the woods, while the seventh member of the gang went out on the track with a red flag. He waved the danger signal before an «pproaching freight train. The engineer obeye: he signal and stopped the train. Sure enough there was danger, but not the kind that the train men had antici- pated. The seven negroes appeared, and each was armed with a pis and held up the train. They succeeded in breaking the seal of the car, but did not get anything except some candy. SIX OF THE GANG SENT TO THE PENITENTIARY. Detective Mike Reardon of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad made a complete investigation of the case and arrested six of the robbers, They were tried and sentenced to two years each in the Moundsville penitentiary, Brooks was re- leased from that prison shortly after last Christ- mas and he returned to this city. Two of his companions were recently sent to jail for steal- ing, and Brooke expresses surprise that one of them did not kill the police officer who arrested them. SENT TO THE FARM. Brooks has not done much better since he returned, and this morning Policemen Sullivan and Kimmell found him sleeping in a wagon not far from the police station on New Jersey avenue. He was taken to the Police Court and Judge Miller gave him the extent of the law—ninety Sunday evening, | days on the farm. ee FREDERICK CITY AND COUNTY.
