ae THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. THE SOCIAL WORLD. The Coming Cabinct Calls and Recep- tions—Persunal Notes of Interest. The new carpets are down in the red corridor and in the red parlor of the White House, where ‘Mrs. Harrison sees her friends, but as the new floor coverings much resemble the old ones they have displaced the casual observer would not note the change. In the private portion of the house the autumnal arrangements are going forward. Last evening Mrs. Harrison. accom- panied by Col. and Mrs. George B. Williams, occupied a box at the opera. Mrs. Harrison wore a becomingly dainty toilet of white India silk and wag without a bonnet. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Juch and the mother of the artiste galled at the White House. Col. and Mra. Robertson of Indiana culled with Mrs. Miller, wife of the Attorney General, on Mrs. Harri- son. The Vice President and Mrs. Morton are at the Shoreham, where they will remain until their own house on Scott circle is ready to be occupied, Mrs. Blaine has not yet concluded all her household matters to her entire satisfaction ‘and so sees none but her most intimate friends im the most informal way in the red house. Mrs. Windom and the Misses Windom are in New York city. Their house on Massachusetts avenue, opposite Highland Terrace, will be ready for the reception of callers by the time ess opens. The house is a most commo- dious one and opens up spaciously. On the right of the entrance is a small reception room, and back of that the entrance hall opens into a square from which the platform stairway goes up, and it has acosy fire place with an iron der at the back of it, and has more the effect of s room than that of a hail. On the other side of the house are the double drawing rooms. The first and smaller one is decorated in pale blue and the second one is in a warm mastic color. The second room is a fine apartment iu size and its windows over- look M street and the residence there of Senator Stockbridge. The dining room is the most notable room, architecturally, in the house. It is a fect oval in shave and is decorated in solemn color. The sideboard is built into the wall, conforming to the general form of the room, and is like a great sea shell in antique oak. Mrs. Windom is adapting the furniture and carpets that once furnished the house that Secretary Windom built upon Scott circle, and which is now the property of Mr. Munn of Chicago, to her present house, which eauee one and has never before been occu- P Mrs. Noble and Mrs. Halstead have about completed their domestic settlement for the season. The furniture that was brought from St. Louis takes kindly to the large house and adapts itself to the new quarters of its own ac- cord seemingly. The drawing room is broken up into most delightful circles for conversational groups; the easy chairs are placed: in charmingly inviting contiguity to their neighbors, and in the room it appears ‘that an unsocial spirit would be unable to hold itself aloof from other individuals of a com- pany assembled there. The mantels are draped with an oriental profusion of rich materials, rich in quality and rich in coloring. Some of the tables in the room have glass tops, under which dainty bits of bric-a-brac might repose Without receiving injury from careless hands. Mrs. Miller, wife of the Attorney General, has begun to think about the duty calis that fall to her lot as the wife of a cabinet minister, and is in favor of adopting the rule made by the ladies of the cabinet in the last adminis- tration, that of not returning the visits made upon the cabinet days, when she will keep open house. Mrs. Miller has been out on several afternoons to make first calls, Mrs. and Miss Rusk have all their house in order and have taken up the active duties of their position. They entertained a company of several hundred people on Wednesday n- ing, and as they are accustomed to giving large receptions they passed through this week's ex- perience without tatigue. Mr. James Rusk, a nephew of Secretary Rusk from Multa, Ohio, arrived from there this week and is the guest of the family. Mrs. Wilmerding, the daughter of Secretary Tracy, is in the city, the guest of Mrs, Mason. Mrs. Wanamaker is expected to arrive hore next week to give some orders in detail about the finishing of her house here that is in preparation for her reception. Mrs. Wana- maker will remain in the city but for a few days, returning to her sumptuous country place at Jenkinstown, which she dislikes exchanging fora Washington home. The family will not come on for the seasou until after the ‘ihanks- giving festival. Justice and Mrs. Blatchford have returned to the city and both are in excellent health and spir- its. Mrs. Blatchford has her beautiful house in perfect order and will be epee toreceive the calls of the cabinet ladies early in December. Mrs. Blatchford expects to have Mrs. B.C. Cum- mings with her this winter, us m former year, Mrs. Cummings is at present with an invalid uncle in Waterville, Me., who may require all her attention. Senator and Mrs, Sherman and Miss Mary Sherman returned to the city a week ago from afive weeks’ stay in Ohio. They are in their pleasant K street home, where their friends re- ceive the old-time warm and cordial reception. As the ladies of the cabinet make first calls upon the ladies of the Senate. and as the lada of the present cabinet are, many of them, com- parative strangers in the ital, this being the rst season here for many of them, the wife of an ex-cul minister makes a@ most helpful suggestion. It is that the families of Senaturs as they arrive in the eity and become rmanentiy located send their addresses to the wives of the cabinet officers who are comparatively few and whose addresses are easily obtained. The congres- sional directory, first issue, which will be pub- lished next month, will, of necessity, have the last years’ addresses of the Senators’ families Ermantine Poole of San Francisco is WANTED@ HELP.
