One of the delegates read a telegram from some one in the east reasserting the statement that the license for the bar was taken out by Mr. Morton's manager. Mrs, Hoffman rose to speak, but Mra, Biake shut off further dis- cussion by the introduction of this resolutiot “Inasmuch as Vice President Morton occu- pies second position in authority in an admin- istration that favors the policy of high license, Imove that the whole matter be dismissed from the consideration of the conveution, as he could not have done otherwise without re- buking the policy of the purty.” This was adopted. Mrs. Conklin, at whose house Dr Cronin lived, was called and identitied the clothes as those worn by Dr. Cronin on the night when he left her house for the last time. She also identified the other articles, including the box of splints and the case of surgical instruments, us having been taken by Dr. Cronin on that occasion, ‘The articles were then put in evidence. After the adjournment lawyers Hynes and Forrest had a sharp quarrel. Flash-Powder Mixers Blown to Pieces Yesterday in Philadelphia. There was a frightful explosion of flash pow- der in the chemical laboratory of Wiley & Wal- lace, at 123 North 7th street, Philadelphia, at ten minutes of 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, which killed three men, including the senior member of the firm, and injured four others, The names of those who were killed are Jos. Wiley, senior member of the firm; Charles Rinedollar, a chemist, and Rudolph Lipp- man, William Kidd had his left thigh blown off and will die. The other men were more or less injured, but none fataily, Kidd’s injuries are of a most peculiar nature. His back, thighs and legs are punctured with scores of holes burned into the flesh by some chemical. The holes vary in diameter from that of a pin head to a thumb nail and in depth in about the same degree of variance. They are all flesh wounds, but their element of danger to life lies in the fact that they are poisonous wounds and death from poison may result, There were abont thirty people in the building at the time of the explosion. Of this number nearly one-half were girls and women, Most of the latter were at work on the third floor of the four-story brick building, and the other | employ groun and th cellar. and were at Work in the rear of the cellar. Following the report was a burst of rosy- hued. dust-iike smoke that swept through thi building and through the crev and broken | windows of the adjoining building. The jury in the Manypenny manslaughter case returned a verdict of acquittal after being ont nearly thirteen hours, The scenes in the jury room to obtain a verdict for acquittal would fill columns were they delineated. South Dakota is in need of money. Gov. Mellette has, during the past week, instructed all territorial officers not to incur the expense of printing elaborate reports to the legislature, as has been the practice in the past. The cur- rent expenses of South Dakota will be about 1,500,000 per annum, while the the present taxation will be only $300,000. Th members-elect of the legislature are greatly in favor of economy, und measures will be in- troduced to abolish the state militia, the r form school at Piankinton, which has ouly ene legulative and it is sion will not last longer Gov, Mellette says: ‘The probable that the than forty days, state has splendid public institutions, but owes every dollar of the cost, and expenses must be cut down. We are too poor a people and our real estate is too heavily mortgaged, and our first duty is to clear ourselves. The curse of South Dakota is chattel mortgages and loan sharks, who > charge usurious interest.” ‘The Husband’s Signa ure , Was Forged. A prominent lawyer in Ottawa, Ont., declares that D. B. Chisholm, fugitive from justice from Canada and the divorced husband of the present wife of Finance Minister Foster, was domiciled in South America and not in the United States at the time of the Chicago ai- vorce papers were alleged to be signed by him. It will be remembered that at the time the di- yorce was applied for by Mrs. Chisholin before the Chicago courts Judge Horton questioned the validity of the signature. It is now believed the signature was forged and the divorce was illegal. ———_-+ee —-____ An Army Officer Sued for Libel. Capt.
