In the last two issues of your paper have been statements regarding the recent marriage of Mr. Maurice da Pont, which, to say the least of them, are misleading. His marriage has not “se jized™ his family, but, with a full knowledge of the facts, was contracted with | their approval. Miss Fitz-Gerald is a young | lady of cultivation and refinement who, through adverse circumstances, was forced to. suppor herself. The only scandal connected with this marriage is the unwarranted falsehoods pub- | lished concerning it by the press. Hoping that the insertion of the above will not occupy too much of your valuable space, A Retarive. The Death | Record. During the twenty-four hours ending at noon today deaths were reported to the health office as follows: White—Christopher Grammer, 69 years; Mary Rountree, 72 years, and Isabel Maury, 75 years, Colored—Carter Richards, 54 ears; Wm. R. Washington, 6 days; Sarah E. jones, 22 years, and John H. Haynes, 58 years. dsm Disorderly Negroes in the County. Last night about 9 o'clock while a festival was in progress at a colored church on Grant avenue in the county a number of young col- cored men were disorderly on the outside and attempted to force their way into the church. Special Officer Smallwood called Officers Nich- olson and McNamara, who were mounted, and they attempted to arrest some of the rowdie: when some ten or a dozen shots were fired, one or more supposed to be aimed at Officer McNamara. One of the roughs grappled with Officer Nicholson, and after a tussle broke away. The officers succeeded in arresting three boys who were in the crowd—Henry Adams, Charles Bird and Wm. Bettis. Judge Miller in the Police Court this morning imposed on the prisoners a tine of #5 each or 15 days and ex- Poa that he could not, under the vy Court ordinances, impose a more severe pentence. ——-—_ — The Corcoran Cadets’ Fair. TWO ACCIDENTS THAT OCCURRED ALL IN A FEW ‘MINUTES—EXCITING TIMES AT A VIRGINIA AVE~ NUE CRossING— WHILE THE GATES WERE OPEN. Shortly after 8 o'clock last night an cast- bound cattle train stopped on Virginia avenue. and by its unusual length completely blocked the crossings at both 3d and 43g streets. So long did the obstruction continue that a num- ber of vehicles congregated on both sides of the track at 4!4 street, four on the north side being street cars of the Metropolitan railway com- pany. The conductor of the cattle train finally cut his train in two at 4%¢ street. Then he signaled Gate Keeper Lewis to raise the bars, and when that had been done the stream of wagons and streetcars poured through until the last car, No. 19, started to cross the tracks. The gates were still up and the conductor made no move, but Engineer Wilcox evidently thought it was time to move on, for he backed down for the purpose of cor ge J up the cut- off cars, as it is stated, without giving any warning. THE STREET CAR STRUCK. The street-car driver. Robert Felter, saw the train coming toward him, and he put the whip to his horses, but he could not escape. An in- stant later and his car was struck by the peng section of the cattle train. There was a cr: ® rattling of broken glass, the shriek of « woman, the hoarser cries of several badly scared men, and the car was off the track. The car driver was slightly damaged, and so was William Bond of 528 4%; street. Others were shaken up and bruised, but only one was se- verely injured—a colored woman named Lu- cinda Willis, whose head was cut deeply in several places, A MAN TORN To PIECES. The street car was soon replaced on its track and the train was coupled up, but the worst had not come. Shreds of human flesh and scraps of clothing scattered along the south siding and a mangled body at Providence hos- pital are in the second chapter. The cattle train had barely started out to go cast when the engine —No, 307—struck a man who was, it is believed, sitting on the track about 100 yards east of 3d street. Engineer Wilcox at once shut off steam and found that the unfortunate man was wedged tightly in behind the cow- catcher, Officers Burns and Henry and Harry Hutton, the ambulance driver, were on the spot in a little while and they worked hard to get the victim out. Considerable force had to be used and it was necessary for Mr. Hutton to take off his coat and craw! in beneath the en- gine before the man could be extricated. Every one present supposed that life was ex- tinct in the crushed mass of humanity that was placed in the ambulance. Both of the man’s feet had been cut off and were lying alongside the track. His right hand was terribly lacer- ated and the right arm broken in several places. His mouth was smashedin and every Tooth broken off, while his bloody Sealy over- hung features that were unrecognizable be- cause of the cinders that had been ground into | them. The only symptom of life was a slight stomachic tremor until the ambulance arriv. at Providence hospital, and there the man said: “TAKE THEM THINGS OFF ME.” Officer Henry at once asked him who he was and he replied: “I am James Sullivan, and I live at 938 Boundary; I work for the Electric car company.” Half an hour later he died. He was about twenty-two years of age. The police say that Sullivan was undoubtedly under the influence of liquor when he was run | over. Shortly before that occurrence he was seen in the vicinity of the 3d-street crossing in company aula ina named Wiiliam Murphy and both were evidently intoxicated. John Suili' fa 2d end ad streets this morning and found sey- eral pieces of flesh and remnants of clothing, AN INQUEST TOMORROW. The coroner will hold an inquest at the eighth precinct station tomorrow. —— Let Well Enough Alone. From the Boston Courier. Cocaine, as is now well known, is a very valuable but an exccedingly dangerous drug. and M. Dufournier has lately published in the Archives de Medecine the remarkable results of his investigations into its use. Cases where accidents have occurred are very numerous, and there is hardly a surgeon using cocaine who has not had occasion to witness them. As early as in 1887 Dr. Mattison published the ac- count of forty such instances and the roll of victims who have lost their life from a dose of cocaine has now reached as high as nine. Ina large number of cases it has given rise toa | species of poisoning, from which the patient usually recovers. Among the phenomena characterizing this form of poisoning one ob- served in a patient of Dr. E. Bradly is worthy of special mention. This patient was taken with facial paralysis, from which he did not recover for six months. Other symptoms are hallucinations, great excitement and cerebral agitation, and, finally, Dr. Leslie Calloghan in one case saw the entire body covered by a scarletinform rash, Dr. Szunman, wishing to remove a large wart situated at the base of the thumb of a young girl of twenty, injected under the skin, close to the wart, one cubic centimeter of a one-in-ten solution of cocaine. The patient felt no pain, but as the little wound was being sewed Lay peng she suddenly lost her color and | fainted; her pulse became weak and slow, and her hands and feet stiffened. Water was dashed in her face and she recovered con- sciousness, but she did not regain at once her sense of resting. as she kept asking where her hands were. this time the stiffening had extended to % © whole of her person, but these alarming symtoms q quieted down little by little and by half an hour's time they all came toa happy end. This case represents the mild- est form of cocaine poisoning. Between this form and the cases in which death ensued come in a series of seyerer forms, in which the alarming symptoms lasted three hours to five or six days. coe FOREIGN NOT The accounts of the horrors of the electric doners, and almost nullified the efforts of the electric light companies seeking to replace the gas lamps with electric lights throughout the metropolis, Gen.
