British Columbia mails received yesterday at Ottawa relate a fearful story of hardship en- dured by four miners who went into the Yukon country this season. Two of them tottered down the mountain into Chilcott, Alaska, Oc- tober 1, barely able to move, They were J. W. Sperry and R. C. Rosa, both of Portland, Ore. John Ingram and F. C. Young of San Diego, Cal., who went with them, died before white settlements could bereached. They ran short of food, the mosquitoes bit them until they were raw and bleeding. Their eyelids became so inflamed that they lost all power to open or close them and they became totally blind. T. Cline. this city. PM. ————— A RELIGIOUS RIOT. Catholics and Methodists Demoralize a Kansas Town. There was a riot at Axtell, Marshal county, Kan., yesterday. The town has about 700 peo- ple, largely Cavholics. On Wednesday a Meth- odist minister named Johnson, from the east- ern part of the state, arrived at Axtell to hold revival meetings. He bad quite a large con- gregation in the evening at the Methodist church and in the audience were a number of Catholics. Soon after beginning his remarks the minister began an attack upon the Catholic church. He became so abusive that one of the Catholics present called him a liar; he con- tinued his remarks until the Catholics could stand it no longer Four of them rushed to | the pulpit and taking the preacher by the collar threw him down. In a moment the pul- pit was surrounded by an angry mob anda general row ensued. Although ‘the Catholics were in the minority they were too much for | the Methodists and succeeded in throwing the preacher and two others out of the house. The ‘Whole town was soon aroused. Four Catholics were arrested and put in the city prison. This 80 enraged the Catholics population that they organized tu assist the imprisoned men. The town of St. Bridget. a few miles distant, is set- | tled entirely by Catholics and it is reported that the whole town is organizing to go to the rescue of the Axtell Catholics. The mayor says he is powerless to control them and fears a conflict between the two elements. The gov- ernor sent @ company of militia to quell the disturbance. He says that four- teen of the senators and thirty-one of the mem- bers of the house of delegates of that legisla- ture are dead. Harvard college, which has long been a heavy holder of Atchison securities, has sold its bonds in # block and the purchasers will probably deposit them under the reorganiza- tion plan, This is in accordance with the plan of action decided upon at the recent meeting of the trustees. Harvard’s risk was a large one, between $400,000 and $500,000. It did not wish to antagonize the plan nor the fricnds of the plan. The college and scholarships had of income from the investment.
