4 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON: FRIDAY. «++. November 1, 1989, CROSBY & NOYES......... HE EVENING STAR has tne fullest Local Circulation efany Newspaper in the Werte, asd as an Advertising Medium w worth more than all the etuet puycrs pususned fm Washington. Kew York Office Room 93, Tribune Building, —<—<<<<_______ st Tomorrow’s Star. As will be seen by the table of contents on another page, tomorrow’s 12 page issue of Tux Stan will be an unumally attractive one, even for its famous Saturday editions, The principal literary feature will of course be the opening chapters of the original story by Faarx R. Srocxtox, written for Taz Stax, which will run for several weeks. On account of this great attraction alone, orders for an extra large number of Satur- day's paper have already been received, both in the city and outside, so that its circulation will reach colossal proportions,—and will certainly be more than double and probably treble that of any other daily paper published in Washington. Advertisers wishing to take advantage of this unapproachable opportunity for communi- cating with the public are requested to send in their favors as early in the day as possible, and not later than noon, if practicable. Other- wise suitable display and proper classification cannot be assured, as, in order to print the enormous edition required, the forms must be pat to press earlier than usual. The fall elections this year derive their sole interest from the circumstance that a new federal administration has been on trial for about eight months, and that the result of next ‘Tuesday's vote will be accepted as, in some measure, the verdict of the people upon its conduct. In other respects it is generally re- garded as an off year in politics, In Iowa, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, and Virginia, there will be chosen a governor and other state officers. In lowa the republi- cans expect a walk-over, as usual, and the dem- ocrats seem disinclined to differ with them, especially as Senator Ailison has taken the stump and is making « strong canvass. In Massachusetts the democrats have nominated a good man in their former candidate, William TRIMMING E. Russell, who made avery fair record asa provincial mayor, and who is popular with the young men everywhere. Mr. Brackett, the republican candidate, is the present lieutenant governor. He has Governor Ames’s money to back him; but the party press is not unani- ON JUVENILE SUBJECTS. PRETTY AS A PICTURE. What do you think of the display of Boys’ and Chil- dren's Overcosts in our west Market Space window? ‘There's an even hundred of them—every one entirely different from the other—count'em. Handsome dis- play, isn’t it? Of course you're not going to be satisfied with s look. Don’t wantyou shouldbe. Come up (second ficor) where you can get right in among them. We'll walk you into the midst of those styles you seein the win- dow and another hundred beside. Whatin the world isthe use of pretending to be boys’ and children’s clothiers unless you've got scomplete line of styles to show? And we haven't s single one more than we need or that our trade warrants us in having. It takes stock—not talk to serve the public satisfactorily. IBAny style of a Coat that you csn possibly want them to wear is here—regular Walking Coste, 8250 Cspe Costs, English and American Reef- TO ers, Uleters, Fur-trimmed Costs, Box $25. Costa. You won't go amiss from fashion with any one of these. OUB prices range from $2.50 to $25—and you won'terr in trusting the lowest-priced grade, nor the highest, That they're shown you under our roof is ail the quarantes of their ‘worthiness you need. But we push the door wide open for you—IF ANY ONE TURNS OUT DIFFERENTLY FROM OUB PLAIN STATEMENTS CONCERNING IT YOU NOT ONLY CAN HAVE YOUR MONEY BACK, BUT WE'LL ESTEEM IT A FAVOR TO BE INFORMED CONCERNING THE MATTER. We're in for serving the people, no matter what personal sac- rifices it may entail. There isn't one chance in five hundred of one of these garments going back on you— for they're inspected, every one af them, before they go into stock. So much for the Overcoats, SAKS AND COMPANY. ‘The three past seasons combined—big ones, too— ‘won't show the volume of business that we've done so {ar in this department this season. The natural consequence is there are lots of broken lots—the nobbi- SHIP A est patterns sold down to one, two or three of skind. Some of these LITTLE areiessthan $5, but many—most of them—are $6, $7, $8 suits. You mously enthusiastic in his support, and the | know our feeling about “Odds and Ends"—Get them farmers are threatening to cut him on account of their suspicion that he looks with a favor- able eve upon the oleomargarine business, so that the democrats feel justified in claiming a handsome reduction of the average republican majority. In Mississippi there is no republi- an opposition worthy the name. In New Jer- sey the parties are pretty evenly divided, any shght democratic preponderance being offset by a coalition in one populous county between | the republicans and the reform democrats. In Obio the republican candidate for governor is somewhat hampered by the over zealous efforts of friends who, in their desire to push his cause, have made unfair ‘war upon the democratic candidate, one of the most popular men, personally, in the state. On the other hand, there is a friction between the sundered parts of the democratic party which bodes ill for their cause. The probability is that the legislature wiil be republican and that Foraker will get through with a tight squeeze. In Virginia General Mahone is making one of his fierce, nervous, energetic fights against the democrats, but has to contend with the open and bitter hostility of malcontents within his own party, who would rather witness republi- can defeat if 1t meant the crushing of Mahone than republican supremacy if it fixed his hold ore firmly upon the party machinery. The chances are against him. The elections in Maryland, Nebraska, New York and Pennsylvania are attracting less at- tention, because the offices to be filled are Jess important. In Maryland, where a comp- troller, members of the legislature and some city and county functionaries are to be elected, the democrats are, as usual, in the ascendant, though there isa hot fight in Baltimore city between the “Gorman ring” and the allied re- publicans and kicking democrats, Nebraska seems well assured for the republicans despite the active work by the tariff reform democrats among the farmers. Pennsylvania may be counted on for its average big republican ma- jority. unless all signs fail. In New York the race isneck and neck. The democrats are are badly split between the Hill people and the adherents of ex-President Cleveland, and the republicans have got into something of a wrangle over the long-standing Platt-Miller differences, The result will not make enough change either way in the present situation to be worth considering. — $a John L, Sullivan bas conferred @ favor on the republican stump speakers in New England this fall. When they don't want to abuse their near neighbors, who are perhaps pretty good fellows in spite of being democrats, they fall afoul of the big bruiser and of the party which proposes to admit him to its select circle next year. Jobn is a convenient person to punish— at a safe distance from his knuckles, -- The war between Postmaster General Wana- maker and the Western Union Telegraph com- pany has been satisfactorily ended without bloodshed. Its result is a victory for Mr. Wana- maker. He has not beld to the rate originally fixed by him, of one mill a word, for he has come to the conclusion, after considering the company's protest, that this rate would be un- fair; but he has shrewdly taken the rate fixed by one of the lines which the Western Union company absorbed, on the theory that the ‘Western Union ought to, and can, do business ae cheaply as any of its old competitors could. ———— ae eae It seems a trifle harsh to make so sweeping a ruleas the New York aldermen have, for the banishment of hand-organs, street bands, &c.; but there is no doubt that something in the way ofa restriction ought to be imposed—a civil service examination, perhaps, to test the quality of the instruments and the art of the man who grinds or fingers them. CO ——— Itwould save a great deal of trouble if all the young men who have ordinary hair and eyes and wear fillings in their front teeth would have their photographs taken and forward out quickly. So we've marked this collection from the differeat grades—e: Blind to their cost or former Price—now they're $5. Then there are some fancy Cheviots. We thought them neat patterns; but you've not taken so kindly to fancy Cheviots as we supposed you would, and although they're 7 and $8 qualities we set them in this $5 grade we've created. There sre not many of any one pattern—on the contrary only from one to six of a style; but it'll be worth your while to see them.
