The Medical Society Proposing Legisla- tion to Prevent Their Spread. The members of the Medical society of the District of Columbia last evening discussed the subject of proper legislation to prevent the ani! spread of infectious diseases. The discussion arose on the report, of which a synopsis has been published in Taz Stan, made by a com- mittee composed of Drs. J. B. Hamilton, Thos. E. McArdle and C. W. Franzoni, to whom ata previous meeting had been referred the ques- tion of a law for compulsory notice, isolation and disinfecting in cases of scarlet fever and diphtheria. A draft of a bill was submitted by Dr. 8. C. Busey, which requires the District Commissioners to annually appoint three resident practitioners of medicine, who, with the health officer and attorney for the District, shall constitute a co to be known as “the infectious and contagious dis- eases commission.” This commission is to make and issue such regulations as may be necessary to prevent the spread and icssen the mortality of the diseases known as smallpox. measles, diphtheria, scarletina and scarlet fever in the ict. All expenses are to be provided for out of the ee contingent fund of the health office; members of the commission are each to be allowed $10 per session, but there must not be over five meetings in a year. Years ago Senators Jones, Vest, Stewart and Cameron were playing a game of poker one evening, and although the stakes were not high the company was good and it ran until long after midnight. A few days afterward Vest remarked to Jones: “I say, Jones, wasn't that a nice game the other evening? ‘Everything went along so well and no one at the game had to watch the other three. I like a gentleman’s game like that, where you don’t have to cut the cards fora square deal.” Jones, who isan incorrigible wag. suddenly conceived the idea of having some fun with Vest, so he manufactured astory to fit the oc- casion, “I'm glad you think so,” he said, “but Bill Stewart doesn’t have that idea of it.” “What!” said Vest quite seriously, “do you mean to tell me that Stewart thinks there was cheating in that game ?” “That's the idea he conveyed to his wife when he reached home, She spoke to me about it yesterday.” “I'm really sorry to hear that,” said Vest “I feel hurt to hear he felt that he hadn't lost his money on the square.” “I feel the same way,” replied Jones. “I felt es if a thunderclap had struck me.” mo did he really say about it?” asked rest. “Well, he came home about 3 o'clock and his wife noticed that his beard was all covered with tobacco juice—a very unusual thing for him and she took him to task for it, He said he had been in a senatorial poker game. “*Where there no cuspidors in room?” ‘es, plenty of ‘em.’ ‘Couldn't you turn from the cards long —— to use them?” “ ‘No, my dear, not in Pesce snot Tne London Times say: it the fruits of the maratime conferencc, now in session at Wash- ington, will be seen when the next conference assembles at The Hague.
