SAM ———— FROM HAGERSTOWN. Railroad Matters—Peach Culture—Court Notes—A Novel Suit. Correspondence of Tax Evexixc Stan Hacersto wx, October 28, Civil engineers of the Western Maryland railroad have just completed additional survey for a route between Williamsport, this county, the present terminus of the Western Maryland, and Cherry Run, the proposed junction with the Baltimore and Ohio road, a distance of about fourteen miles. President Hood of the former road was here Friday and decided upon the route outlined. Operations will be begun soon, This road will open up anew territory admirably adapted to peach culture and already enterprising fruit growers are making pur- chases of lands. Mr. J. Mitchell Stover of Pen Mar has purchased 600 acres and next spring he will plant 30,000 trees. ‘Two murder trials will come up at the ap- proaching term of the circuit court of this county, something unusual in its criminal annals. One of them will be that of Charles Sanders, colored. who killed Rudolph Herr, a farmer, in Clearspring about two years ago by bitting him on the head with a stone, but es- caped and was ouly apprehended about ten days ago in Pittsburg. The other is that of Michael H. Zimmerman, a young man who stabbed and killed Robert H. Slick at Leiters- burg several months ago. The stockholders of the Washington county branch of the Baltimore and Obio road met here on Saturday and re-elected the old board of directors, who. in turn, elected C. K. Lord resident and F. M. Hildebrand secretary and urer. Both of these gentlemen are resi- dents of Baltimore and identified with the Bal- timore and Ohio management. The report of the branch for the past year, not yet public, will show a gratifying increase in business, with & balance on the right side of the account. Mr. Michael Welty, ® prosperous and re- ected farmer of the Funkstown district. is He became widely known several years ago because of an encounter in this city with by confidence men, during which he lost 1,000. Cards have been issued announcing the wed- ding of Miss Belle Brosins of this city and Mr. , Kuhn of Hancock, this county. at the home of the intended bride on Madison avenue on Weduesday, October 30. David M. Burns of Smithsburg, this county, has filed an application for a divorce from his wife, Kate Burns, on the ground of adultery. Jobn M. Gaines and Elie Wade, who form the Jocal board of school trustees for the Boons- boro’ district, have filed a petition in equity for @ mandamus and order of the court compelling the county school commissioners to confirm the Sppoiutment of teachers for the Boonsboro’ tchools as made by the petitioners in their offi- cial capacity, which were rejected by the com- mistioners. November i has been d for the hearing. As the trustees are appointees of the commissioners and can be removed at will, the Proceeding is « novel one, and the outcome will be watched with interest. If the present degree of inactivity prevails |* up to election day this campaign will be placed on record as a political phenomenon, i aeaions Prince George’s County Happenings. Correspondence of Tux EvENIxe Stan. Hyarrsvitte, October 28, Cardinal Gibbons came here from Baltimore Saturday evening and spent the night as the guest of Mr. Tricon of this town. Yesterday was “Blue Monday” indeed for many a poorhuman. The wires seldom bring to a newspaper office so many announcements of suicides in a day as came yesterday. There was Oliver Garrison, one of the oldest and most prominent of St. Louis’ citizens, who commit- ted suicide in Forest park by shooting himself through the head. He had been prosperous, but asteel furnace in which he was largely in- terested lost money and he chose to bid the world good-bye. He was a brother of the late Commodore Garrison. He was vice-president of the Missouri Pacific when Jay Gould bought it, In Chicago a former millionaire, “Old Char- lie” Clark, put himself out of the world. He had lost bis wealth and become a bar tender. James Watts, aged sixty-six, one of Law- rence, Mass., best-known citizens, superin- tendent of mule spinning at the Atlantic mills for many years, attempted suicide by shooting himself three times in the head. He will prob- ably die. He had just returned from a European trip, taken for his health. He is a prominent Odd Fellow and Elk. Caleb Dinsmore of Claremont, N. H., put the muzzle of a gun to his eye and pushed the trigger with acane. He left a note saying tbat he must soon die from cancer and preterred not to suffer, He had made arrangements for his funeral, even to laying out a suit of clothes in which he wanted to be buried. Henry Hovwitz, a New York diamond mer- chant, forty-one years old, shot himself in the right temple with a ol in his office on the third floor of No. 17 Maiden lane. W. W. Wilson, ticket seller of the Northern Pacitic office in Butte, Mont., took a dose of chloroform and then shot himself through the head, dying instantly. He had failed to make his remittance for the past three days and was short $500. Amos P. Brown of East Windsor, Mass., sat down on the West Shore railroad track at Canajoharie as the express train east came thundering along. ‘The wheels took the mau's head off clean without mutilating it or the body. The head fell sixty feet away. At Schoharie, N.Y., Will Freemyer took a fatal dose of laudanum because his wife left him on ge’ tting Proof of his infidelity. THE TIN SMITH WAYLAID. A New Line of Proof I Discovered in the Cronin Case. Gus Klahre, the tin smith who gave informa- tion to the police in regard to soldering a tin box for Martin Burke, was set upon Saturday night in # lonely spot by two men and given a fearful beating. This is the second time Kiahre has been assaulted. The first occasion the as- sailants were some Irish and Italian youths, who claimed in court that Klahre had insulted one of them in the street. Saturday night, ac- cording to Klahre’s story, he discovered on his way home two men waiting for him behind a brick pile. Klahre started to run but was caught by a brickbat in the small of the back. Upon rising he received a ter- rific thump on the jaw and was pursued to his home, where he feil unconscious on the ste} There he was found leter by members of his family. For several hours he was delirious. ‘The young man indignantly resents the sug- gestion by police who were investigating the affair today that he was on a drunk and that the assault is a myth. A Chicago paper says the state has struck a new leed in the Cronin case against Martin Burke. Through the young woman who Was em) pores 48 a telegraph oper- ator at Hancock, last May, the state's attorney has learned t theentiy of the senders of telegrams which Burke received from that point. One of these telegrams, it is said, was addressed to Burke at Joliet, teliing him to get out quickly, Another was addressed to Cooney at Chicago, telling him to take some moucy to Burke at Joliet to assist the latter's tight, Other telegrams were addressed to well-known men in various western towns along the route which Burke took on his way to Canada, It was through a leak somewhere as to these dispatches that Martin Burke's journey was in- terrupted. In addition to the correspondence between Burke and the Hancock parties it is alleged that other communications passed which seriously compromise one or more of the men recently indicted one charge of attempted jury bribing on account of their attempts to defeat justice in another direction, ‘Thomas Duane, who is believed to be the mau who drove Dr. Cronin to the Carlson cot- was arrested Saturday night at St.Joseph, and is to be taken toChicago immediately.
