THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON SOCIAL MATTERS. A Season of Weddings—Movements of Well-Known People. Miss Rhoda Christmas, the granddaughter of the late Mre. Myra Clark Gaines, and Dr. ©. will be married tonight at 8 iphany church, the Rev. Dr. Mc Kim officiating. assisted by the Rev. M. Barr. assistant rector of the church. The altar w be decorated with growing plants and flowers. The groom will be attended by lus best man. Mr. Wm. A. Kennedy, and also by eight grooms men, who are Mr. 5t. Julien Dapray, Mr. Chas Barry, Mr. Barry Bulkley, Mr. Rush Mar- sbail,’ Mr. Samuel Trimble, Mr. Samuel Maddox, Mr. Emmet Morris and Mr. James M. Christmas, brother of thx bride. The ushers, six in number, have been appointed as follows: Mr.Fred McKenny. ‘Mr. Will Abert, Mr. Z. M. Knott, Mr. Crane and Lieut. Bryan. The bride will be attended by eight bridesmaids and preceded by a-maid of honor, and will enter the church upon the arm of her elder brother, Mr. Wm. W. Chris:- maa, The bridesmaids are Miss Gaines of Warrentown, Va.; Miss Byrd of Winchester, Va.; Miss Denver, Knoxville, Md.; Miss Hop- kins of Baltimore, Miss Gallagher, Augusta, Ga., and Miss Anus Bryan, Miss Eva Dapray and Miss Roeselle of thiscity. Miss Julia Ken- , sister of the groom, will act as maid of honor to the bride. The attendants of the bride will wear short dresses of white tuile aud carry large bouquets of rich roses. At the close of the ceremony a reception will be held from 9 to 12 by the newly wedded pair, who will be assisted in receiving their friends and guests by Judge and Mrs, Jno. Biair Hoge, and also by Miss Kennedy, sister of the groom. Cards of admission are required at the church. The engagement of Mr. William W. Christ mas and Miss Norris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Norris of this city, has been formaliy an- nounced to their many friends. The marriage will be soleranized on October 30. Mra. Battle and Miss Somerville, sisters of Mrs. John Blair Hoge, are her guests at the Portland for the winter. Miss Kate Field, who has been in the city for the past week, returned to New York city yes- terday, but expects to come back here for the winter in a week or ten days. Mrs. R. J. C. Walker, who is well known in this city and bas recently purchased a hand- some home in Philadelphia, will visit here shortly, ——— by her two nieces, the Misses Weightman, and they will be the guests of Mrs. and Miss May Potts of G street. Mrs, McCulloch and Miss Mary McCulloch are in New York city for a fortnight’s stay. Ex- Secretary McCulloch is at his country piace still, but the McPherson square residence is in readiness for the family to occupy any day. Senator Pugh and Senator Ransom are in the city and will be present at the marriage of Miss a tonight, The latter is a cousin of barcler Thursday at Grace P.E. church, Landing, Md., were married Ensign john A. Hoogewerff, U.S. navy, and Miss Edwardine L. Hiester, daughter of the late Dr. Francis Mublenberg Hiester, U.S. A., nnd great- granddaughter of Gen. Peter Muhlenberg of the revolutionary army. The bridesmaids were dressed in pale pink satin. The bride entered on the arm of her stepfather, Mr. Chas. W. Keim. The bride's dress was of heavy white setin trimmed with lilies of the valley. She wore a necklace of pearls and carried la France roses. The groom was in full uniform. Miss Rachel Sherman, danghter of the gen- eral, will spend the winter in Paris, Senator and Mra. Kenna are mourning the loss of their little child, ason but four days old. On his return to Washington from a pleasant visit to Penusylvania Mr. Manning Fernandez was accompanied by his cousin, Miss Walker of Carlisie, Pa, Miss Walker wili be the guest of Mrs. J. M. Fernandez. on H street, Mrs. Lieut. Sharrer, who has been visiting her friend, Miss Anna Vogel, left on Sunday for New York, where she will visit her brother, Lieut. Bichards of South Washington, to take place at St Paul's P.E. church on the evening of the 23d instant. Senator Mitchell of Oregon has leased the beautiful house of Mrs, David Smith, . W714 Connecticut avenue, furnished, and is uow in possession of it, Mrs. Mitchell, his wife, and Miss Mattie Mitchell, his daughter, who have been living abroad for the past few years, arrived in New York ou Monday by steamer and are now in im that city. Mrs. Mitchell, who has been very ill for the past year, is utterly unable to make the journe, Z to this city without the prelimi- wary of a few days rest. Their ocean voyage was a very rough one. Mr. H. E. Mitchell went on from here to mect his mother and sister and will escort them hither this week. Mrs. Mitchell is in so delicate a state of unhealth that after her arrival she wishes to have perfect rest and quiet, and will therefore be unable to see any one until she is convalescent. Mrs. Smith and her three daughters are at Mrs. Penn's, No. 1401 H street. Mr. David Smith of the engineer corps, U.S.N., on board the U.5.S. Boston for the past two and a half years, has now been put on waiting orders and Will join his family here this week.
