THE WHEELMEN’S LANTERN PARADE A Fairy Scene on Pennsylvania Avenue Last Night—The Line Reviewed By the President. ETWEEN TWO solid walls of hu- manity that formed as lane up Pennsylvania igwheelmen last night, their ma- chines gaily il- luminated. The street was almost | impassable and it required monumental patience and physical ef- fort on the part of the cyclers even to start, Long before the hour set for the parade to form at the botanical gardens the street was filled with people and every car that passed into it was overloaded with passengers seeking favorable places from which to view the parade, ‘hen the sidewalks became crowded, which was very soon, the throng began to use the open pavement until the driving of care and carriages was attended with great danger. Four aimost unbroken lines were formed from the Treasury to the Capitol—two on the curbs and the others close to the edges of the car tracks, while as many great currents of human beings moved back and forth between the bar- riers, EMBARRASSED AT THE START. The start of the wheelmen was attended with disappointment. In the first place it was learned, soon after assembling, that the street car companies had refused to stop running for the occasion and that the riders would be forced to occupy only the north side. instead of the entire width of the avenue. as was orig- | inally intended. This brought forth a general | groan from the cyclers, who stood waiting by the side of their steeds along the curb on three | sides of the garden. Some of the impatient ones lighted their candles early, and, like the improvident maidens who were waiting for the Biblical bridegroom, came to grief before the affair was over, as their dips began to putter and then gasped out, leaving them in dai us way SWIFTLY AND SILENTLY the parade was formed with the first division at the corner of 2d street and Pennsylvania avenue and the others ranging round the square. The first division was composed of the Capital club, fifty wheels, H. N. Low in command, Most of the machines were safeties and ail were adorned with the regulation double lantern, TALL AND SHORT. Little Mies Hanna with her wheel a foot and | a half high, was next to her father, who rode a 62-inch upright, in the front rank. After the | start was made she was the heroiue of the oc-' casion aad won a plenty of praise for her steady riding and her neat handling of her tiny ma-| chine, The Washington cycle club, under the com- mand of E A. Curry, formed the 2d division. There were 35 members and 15 guests in line. The third division was composed of the Co- lumbia cycle club, Captain Harry Hammond, | commanding. This orgunization turned out a larger number of men than any of the others except the miscellaneous di there being 65. «members and 15 guests. The wheels of the clubmen were decorated very prettily, some of them dis- | playing great tasteand giving beautiful effects. | DECORATED WHEELS. PUSHING THRUUGH THE CROWD, At the command given by bugle the wheel- men rolled their machines across the street and formed in fours ready to start. After this was done there was a delay of about half an hour before the bead of the line succeeded in effecting an entrance into the dense mass that choked the avenne from curb to curb for_a distance of several squares.
