CONDENSED LOCALS. hopes ary AT IVY CITY. Readi: for the Fall cating next Week. THE EXCELLENT CONDITION OF THE TRACK—A PERFECT STEEPLECHASE COURSE—PLYERS THAT ARE ON HAND—INTERESTING SCENES UPON THE ARRIVAL OF A STABLE. Six or seven boys intently interested in a game of crap, another Individual with a ragged coat and a pipe, oblivious to the cries of “Come @ seven,” or “Big Dick from Boston,” but studiously conning a Goodwin's turf guide, this is a general scene at the stables at Ivy City. The flaishing touches are being put on at the grounds in anticipation of the vig crowds at the meeting next week. The Ivy City course is noted for its fine track and beautiful surround- ings, and It certainly never appeared to better | advantage than it does this fall. The track itself Is in perfect condition, the old fault of the liability of becoming heavy after asiight shower having been obviated by plac- ing a layer of fine sand over the entire surface. The track has been packed, all inequalities of pea grip fri and Sse tira re presents an pearance iculat 0 make even the borees that drag the heavy roll- ers feel a yearning to start off at racing speed. THE STREPLECHASE COURSE, as already mentioned in Tue Star. has been considerably improved this year, the water Jump having been moved back in full view of every part of the grand stand. Two extra hur- dies will be placed on the track, doing away with the long rua in on the flat. This course is Probably the finest in the country, pos- sessing as it does a long run on the level and also a considerable hill, the ascent of which is calculated to pump the flyers and bring forth sobs from burating lungs, and a de- Scent which ts a terrible searcher for faulty fore- legs and timid hearts. This course, as It will be used next week, is about two and one-half miles long and contains fourteen hurdles, all of which are four feet in height. ‘THE STABLES at the grounds have also been greatly improved and are now everything that could be desired. The wooden buildings have been reroofed and each alternate one moved to the opposite side of the road. giving more space and freedom. The two large brick stables are excelled by none in the country @nd it is a very particu!ar horse that would not be satisfied with the large, airy box stalls. wide pessages and exercise track under sover. HORSES ON HAND, afest of the horses entered tor the several events are on hand and about 160 flyers are on the grounds. Davis and Hall came down trom Sheepshead Bay on Monday with 21 cracks. The pets of the stable are Oriflamme and sess, both being entered tor the autumnal handicap. Spider Anderson is the rider for Davis and Hall and he has shown the way under the wire to a good many flelds so far this year. This string Includes several very handsome yearlings which are gradually being broken in for next season. Some of the other staples are W. P. Burch with 10; C. D. McCoy, 8; E.S. When it is borne in mind that each horse has a separate man assigned us his or her especial valet and that besides these there are venerally several jockeys, any number of boys and trainers, it will be seen that there is quite alittle army traveling with each string. fhe stables bring with them their cooking uten- sils, beds, blankets and provide tood fer them- selves and horses, the juckey club furnishing nothing but stable room and straw for bedding. AS Foon as the men arrive on the ground they proceed to fix up their quarters, and in a mar- velously short time are eotirely at home. Many of the pet horses have their stalls decorated with highly colored lithographs and cards. Each st: @ smal! dog, andthe uglier the better. PRELIMINARY TRAINING. Just now the horses are being put through thelr preliminary traluing. In the morning early the boys are put up and they are taken around the track for two or three miles ata rattling good yallop. In the evening, heavily blanketed, they are led around the grounds in solemn procession. Five races will take place each day of the Meeting next week, the first starting at 2 o'clock on Monday. ees An Insane Woman in the Street. Yesterday, about 3 a, m., Policeman Fox, of the second precinct, took in charge a colored woman whom he found wandering about the streets barefooted and bareheaded.and who was talking wildly, as though crazy on religious subjects. When taken to the station she gave her name as Amanda Hawkins, and said she had been in the insane asylum, but for eighteen months had been working as a servant at a house on Corcoran street. The officer learned that Amanda had hada carving knife which she was going to use on some one, but the knife was not found. Amanda was locked up for safe keeping. Last evening she was raving mad and said that the Lord would some day right her wrongs. ——— Excvraioys To Bavrimore via BALTIMORE AND Outo.—#1.20 for the round trip October 7 to 11, good until the 12th.
