Special invitations were sent to Sandy Spring and Baltimore, Md., archers, who bave so often made merry with our local bowmen, but word comes back that both clubs have deserted the gree sward. Though the tournament must be largely lo- cal the contests for the various prizes will be close and interesting. Fiveof the ladies are quite evenly matched for first place in the club this year, and asthe leading round to be shot by them isthe same as that at which they weekly contest for the club championship it would take a Yankee guesser to name the winner. Amorg the bowmen Messrs. Bartlett, Mecutchen and Ford rank about ‘even at the mid ranges, and as they have not en pitted against each other at any meeting since midsummer their friends will watch their scoring with interest. Several old-time Poto- macs have promised to once more enter the lists and their presence will be doubly agree- able to the present members of the club, as it will revive pleasant memories of former <a; when they were active bowmen. Trains leave for Highlands at 12:10 and Lp ea and lovers a of the pastime are assured of a hearty w come, THE PROGRAM includes the double American round for the gentlemen and double Columbia for the Iadies; also flight, turtle-back and unknown-distance shooting. ‘The Potomac meets are peculiar in that they are not confined to contests at the stated 7 but varied b@ certain odd matches. At urtle-back shooting, copied from the South American way of capturing turties, the archers stand two or three score yards away froma target, cast prone upon the ground, and shoot their shafts high into the air. Curving over they drop all about the target and sometimes in. This is a most interesting form of archery, but is little practiced owing to the danger of breaking arrows by striking a hidden stone. The championship contests are close this year and will not be decided till the close of Sim Kxicuts should be equipped with a box of ccaline headache powders, Hor Corres. Notice has just been received of the date of the annual meet of the Eastern archery asso- ciation. This will occur at Brooklyn, N.Y., about the 24th and 25th of October. At present several of the Potomacs expect to attend thi meet and the outloox is that next year the East- ern association tournament will be held at Washington. Interest in archery has qnickened alittle lately in the District, but the difficulty of securing ranges for private practice has hindered many from actively engaging in the sport. Since the national meet at Dayton. Ohio, in August new clubs have been forming in that section and unusual activity prevails, Next week the Deyton club holds its first tourna- ment on its new grounds, Aclub has just been started at Frederick, Md. Small bands of bowmen are shooting at segregated points in that state and a litle united effort should again make this a noted archery center. ‘ THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.
