Ina two-story frame house at No. 426 8th street southwest, lhves a young colored couple, William Douglass Cross and Hattie, his wife, who were married two months ago, He is a fish and oyster dealer. Last night Hattie and her husband had an altercation and the result is that she is now confined to her bed with a bullet in her head, while her husband is the occupant of one of the cells in the South Wash- ington police station. Hattie and her husband lived peaceably together until Sunday night when their honeymoon ended in a ‘quarrel. Since that time they have had several misun- derstandings. THE QUARREL, Last evening shortly after 7 o'clock William returned home and went directly to his room. “Don't you want your supper?” inquired his mother-in-law, who lives in the house. Bers ” he replied, “I haven't got time to eat ii Cross’ wife followed him to the room on the second floor and had not been there many minutes before the mother-in-law heard them Sarita She went upstairs to inquire what e trouble was and says she heard Cross say Saree going to remain away all night; beney her Saughter replied, ‘if you do I'll fol- low you, * and that Cross retorted, ‘‘and if you do I'll kill you.” ‘The old woman adds that she told Hattie to remain at home and begged her not to follow her husband. SHOT DOWN IN THE STREET. She did not take der mother's advice but fol- lowed William out. It was but a few minutes later when the report of a pistol shot was heard at the corner of 7th und C streets southwest, not three squares from their house, Persons ing at the time saw the form of a woman fall to the ground and saw a colored man hasten from the scene. The woman was Hattie and the man was her husband. “Police,” cried some one, but there was no officer in that vicinity at the time. An officer was soon found and Policeman Henry re- sponded to a teley lephione message, bringing the patrol wagon with him. ‘The officer was going to take the wounded woman to the hospital, but when he looked at her he thought she was dy- ing and he therefore took her to her home. THE ARREST OF CkOss. It took but a few minutes for a crowd to as- semble and some one said: “Why don't you get her husband?” “Where is he?” asked the officer. “Down the street with his father,” replied some one in the crowd. The officer went down to the corner and there saw Cross’ father. Further down the street he saw aman hastening his footsteps. ‘That aroused the officer’s suspicions and when he went in pursuit of the man, the latter ran. “Stop there,” shouted the officer, “or I'll shoot you.” “What bave I done?” asked Cross as he turned toward the officer. “You've killed your wife,” said the officer, after he had gotten Cross in custody. Dr. Crook soon arrived at the home of the Crosses. The wounded wife was then in an unconscious condition. There was a bullet hole in her right temple. The doctor probed for the bullet, but failed to find it. CROSS SAYS HIS WIFE SHOT RERSELF. The prisoner denied the statements made above by his mother-in-law and also denied that he shot his wife. Toa Sran reporter he said that he was going to Kernan’s theater last night and refused to take his wife because he thought it was not a proper place for her to go. She followed him out of the house and when near the corner of ‘7th and C streets she shot herself, THE WIFE SAYS CROSS SHOT HER, During the night the patient recovered con- sciousness, and when questioned said that her j husband carried the pistol out of the house and shot her. he beat ber. This morning she was able to converse with her mother at times, but she was in great pain. Smith, and was convicted of man- slaughter and sentenced to three months in jail, which be served. The death of Curry was caused by @ blow with a brick thrown gid Cross iu a quarrel, into which he had been pro- voked by the deceased. ‘The young wife is seriously, Verba fatally, wounded.
