Walker, chief of the bureau of, navigation, Navy department, has been relieved from that duty and ordered to the command of the “squadron of evolution,” consisting of the cruisers Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and Yorktown. He is now laps York, making preparations for the sailing o! the squadron for Europe, which will be its first objective point. As soon as he has raised his flag on the Chicago, which is to be TRE FLAGSMIP, he will return to Washington to assume charge of the burean until his successor is appoin‘ed. The order is by no means a reflection on the administration of Commodore Walker as chief of the most important bureau of the service, for he is acknowledged on every side to be the best fitted man in the navy for the post. He possesses great executive ability and is thor- Poghly fa familiar with the det of his work ot the personnel of the navy, which is entirely under his charge. He has had, however, nearly EIGHT YEARS OF CONTINUOUS LAND DUTY, having been designated chief of the bureau October 22,1881, and it is outside of the pale of precedent to give an officer more shore service than this and seldom as much. In sending him to sea the Secretary has given him the most desirable billet erie the ships of the new squadron being the best ones completed in the navy. Commodore Walker will, for the pres- ent, be in command of the European station. A BOLD DIAMOND ROBBERY. How Two Clever Thieves Operated in Karr’s Jewelry Store. At the jewelry store of J. Karr, No. 945 Penn- sylvania avenue northwest, a bold and daring diamond robbery was recently committed in broad daylight, while the clerks were in the store attending to their usual duties. Last Thursday morning two stylishly dressed young men entered the store and desired to look at some diamonds. They spent some time in examining the precious stones and other val- uable jewelry, and finally one of them pur- chased a pair of diamond earrings and some small trinkets, for which he paidcash. The last article purchased was iver cup, appar- ently as @ present to some child, whose name he wanted engraved on it. “I find,” said the purchaser, “that I am $2 short, but never mind, I'll just leave the cup until { return.” “Never mind,” said the clerk, “you can drop in seme other time and settle the adJitional amount of #2.” “Very well,” said the customer. “I'll take the cup, butI would rather leave something. Then I will have to return, as what I leave wil remind me of the bill. Here's a bundle,” he said, handing over a large pasteboard box. The clerk laid the box on a shelf, but as the customer failed to return his suspicions were excited and the box was opened. liwes found to contain nothing that would bring more than seventy-five cents, This increased the suspicion already aroused and an investigation was made. It was then learned that two ip of diamond earrings and other diamond jewelry had been stolen, worth from $1,000 to $1,500. Mr. Karr reported the robbery at police headquarters, but no rec- ord of it was made cn the book kept there for that urpose. When a Srax reporter called at Mr. Karr’s today he said he had reported the robbery to the detectives, but that they wanted it kept quiet for a while.’ He declined to give the residence of Edwin M. He says in his | etter that roperty of the Catholic univer- sity comes within the meaning of the section and requests that the property be marked ex- empt upon the tax books. He also calls atten- tion to the fact that the building of the uni- versity has greatly enhanced the value of ground in that locality, and submits that these considerations should reduce the Com- missioners to exercise liberality in making es- timates and urging appropriations for the opening of streets leading to the university grounds and cqveniany oe for the completion of | fi street east by the lay: of sidewalks and the improvement of the iageway.
