4 RED TICKET DAY. aT BAURES —SS———————————— New York Office Room 93, Tribune Building, —— The evils of the grog-shop nuisance on the ‘7th street road are set forth with much point in the communication of Mr. Arthur Stabler in another column. Mr. Stabler is a prominent member of that model Quaker community at Sandy Spring, Md, that has done so much in be- half of good farming, good morals, good society, good schools, good citizenship and good govern- ment, in Maryland. His representations in this maiter are therefore entitled to much considera- tion. He calls attention to the point that more country produce comes to Washington over the 7th street road than any wagon road leading to this city, and then refers to the very striking fact that since the sale of intoxicating liquors has been abolished in Montgomery county, it has almost if not quite doubled its producing ability. He urges therefore that it is a great hardship on those who have to use this great thorough- fare so extensively, that their teamsters have to be subjected to the great temptation of passing some thirty or forty saloons (some of them of a very low order) in traveling the few miles in the District between the Maryland and city boundary lines. Mr. Stabler does not in the least exaggerate the extent of the evils complained of, not only in the temptation to drivers and teamsters who have to ruu the gauntlet of this long line of saloons, but in the demoralization of farm iabor in the neighborhood. It is to be hoped that the Commissioners, through their new rules, will be able to minimize this nuisance if they cannot abate it altogether WE WILL HAVE OUR USUAL RED TICKET DAY ON FRIDAY, WITH EXTRAORDINARY BARGAINS IN ALL DEPARTMENTS, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MENTION ITEMS, 4S OUR STORE I8 CLOSED ALL DAY ‘THURSDAY ON ACCOUNT OF HOLIDAY. The public has detected that the spoilsmen in clamoring for a repeal of the law are attempting to take ad- vantage of their own wrong. They have evaded its pplication, and nullified its provisions as far as possible, and now Pronource it a sham and a fraud, deserving of repeal, by reason of such evasion. They have reduced its practical results and advantages toa minimum by embarrassing its enforcement, and now demand its destruction, because the benefits from it have not been greater, and because it has not been consis- tently enforced. The principle of the law is good, and its general effeet is good. The prin- ciple will be preserved, its application will be enlarged, aud the resulting benefits will be in- creased. The spoilsmen will not be allowed to take advantage of their own wrong, and to kill the principle of civil sertice reform solely on the ground that they have succeeded im erip- pling it in its application, a Tt is too bad that Washington's two sets of early October guests should miss each other's presence here. They will not even have a chance to say “How d’ye do?” and “Good bye.” ‘The All Americas delegates will get together on the 2d of October, only to be started on their long jaunt the next day. The Knights Templar will begin coming to town soon after the All Americas delegates quit it, It would be an interesting thing for our visitors from abroad to'sce what a representative class of citizens are gathered into the great benevolent fraternities im this country and what perfect freedom our people enjoy to band themaelves together in secret societies without a shadow of suspicion of their loyalty to the government. oe The demand is now raised im Canada fora Dominion divorce court, with laws id for a rapid despatch of business, ‘This is doubt- leas intended for the convenience of American defaulting cashiers and other fugitives from jas' who haven't time to stop over a train in IT GAVE US GREAT PLEASURE TO WAIT UPON HIM AND WE SUON FITTED HIM OUT WITH ONE OF OUR BEST SUITS AT THAT PRICE. The park is the city’s only big breathing lace, and to use it for @ fair site is to destroy it for a public pleasure-ground. The fine old trees, of which such care has been taken for years, must ~ cut awn; the lawns which havo grown so hand- some @ turf after a quarter-century of nursing must be spoiled. Every workingman in the big city feels a personal interest in the park, as the one bit of out-of-doors enjoyment he gets inthe week is taken there. The millionaire who is expected to furnish money to swell the fair fand buttons up his pockets the inst ant there is any talk abont hurting the park, for that is where he takes his afternoon drive and where bis sous and daughters have their daily gallop om horseback. New York cannot afford to sacrifice its breathing spaces to any tern- porary gratification of local pride. The tendency in all large cities to encroach upon the parks with piles of brick and mortar isso strong that the slightest yieldiag in such a case ig a very dangerous preeedent. The people of Wash- ington have been called upon many times to fight for the pr tection of their cultivated and frequented parks against such encroachments, and they ca: sympathize with the protesting maltitade in New York.
