He also asked that the employes be paid twice @ month, Capt. Symons was called upon for an expres- sion of his views, and today submitted a re- port in which he says that it is # well-estab- lished fact throughout the country that labor in the country is paid for at less rates than in the city and it is but justice that itshould be a0, as the cost of living in the city is Yery much more than it is in the country. Nearly all the laborers employed on the count roads, — = Symons, have their own where ey e homes, raise truck. Thursday is also observed as aholiday, Wednesday evening and Thurs- day services will be held in the synagogue. In the orthodox churches, as distinguished from the reformed, the celebration is continued through Friday. In fact many of the orthodox Israelites visit the synagogues each day during the present week to offer up No rary prayers for forgiveness. Some fasta half of each day while nearly all visit the graves of departed friends. In addition to the religious celebra- tion of the day the social feature is marked, New year cards are sent by friends. It is season of reconciliation and cordial relations, Among the orthodox Hebrews white shrouds are worn during the services on new year day, and the vestments of the synagogue are white. Rosh Hashanah, as new r year's day is called, is generally observed by all Hebrews. Places of business are closed and the day is devoted to oo duties and the social customs which mar! this holiday. 2 es She Asks for Strict Proof. Isaac, who says he arrived from Johnstown, Pa., a few days ago, was arrested Saturday last for vagrancy and yesterday morning escaped from the work-gang on 14th street. Arriving at the east branch he discarded his workhouse suit and swam the river, landing on Dr. Chris- tie’s property, and though closely pursued by men in @ boat he eluded them and took the woods down the Anacostia road. Here he (ep pe the day, but during that time some one ad provided him with clothi It was about 5 o'clock that Sergeant McCathran learned that the refuge was still in the woods and, ac- companied by Officer Marr, rode out to bring him in if possible. Mergen proved tobe a fleet runner, but ut that point there are no fences and he was invariably headed off till at last, being completely exhausted, he gaye up the Trace, and about 6:30 was turned over to the workhouse authorities again. A Lirrte Grau Seriousiy Hurt By a Fann.— Yesterday afternoon Agnes, the six-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Murphy of Har- rison street, fell from the porch at the side of Geo. Schwab's barber shop to the ground be- low, a distance of about 10 fect, and was seri- ously bruised about the head, which is supposed to have struck the gutter curb that passes through the yard. It was at first feared the injury was fatal, but the little one is better to- day. " Drs, Harrison and Bayne were called in. Runaway Accipent.—About noon yesterday, as Mrs. Mary L. Goddard and her boy of Sur- rattsville were drivug near the Wallach school building. corner of 8th street and Penn: ii avenue southeast, their team was frighteaed by the school children and ran off, and they were thrown from the wagon. Mrs. Goddard was considerably bruised on her arm and face, but not seriously hurt, AccrpentaLty Kittep.—Edward Ellis, col- ored, of Good Hope Hill was killed yesterday afternoon by a bank of earth falling on him about 3 p.m. at the corner of 4th and F streets northeast. The body was taken to the sixth precinct station and the family notified. He was about forty —s old. Greene, Dr. Garnett Hills and J. McKee Bor- den. The committee have not yet decided whether to have two classes of contests, a» was the case in the spring tournament, or one class. In the latter event there will probably be three prizes provided. There are now twenty- eight members in the club and it is expected that nearly all will enter the contests, which will probably extend through four or five days, owing to the shortening of the days. Work will be begun on the club’s courts—four in namber—during the present week to put them in condition for the playing. esas mpc Public Amusements. Anavon's Opera Houst.—A large audience greeted Mr. W. A. Mestayer and Miss Theresa Vaughan at Albaugh’s last night and the hearty laughter and liberal applause proved that the revived extravaganza “Tbe Tourists” has lost none of its old-time popularity. The only object of play and players is to amuse and in this respect both fill the bill admirably. The humor of Mr. Mestayer is as massive as his physique, without being near so broad, and the singing of Miss Vaughan is far better than is usually heard off the operatic stage. The com- pany is composed of good specialty people and many of the acts are highly artistic. while all are entertaining. ‘The Tourists” will be re- peated every night this week and at matinees on Wednesday and Saturday. New Nati ‘Tueates.—Joseph Arthurs’ melodrama. ‘Lhe Still Alarm,” which has made a phenomenal success on both sides of the Atlantic during the last two years, was pre- ted toa Washington audience for the first me at the National last night. As a melo- drama it is a good piece of literary work, with a strong and sequential plot and with some sbarply-drawn characters. The incidents are possible, though somewhat exaggerated, as is always the casein melodrama, and with the present company, which is a good one, the piece would, upon its merits, meet with success. But its literary merit, the stirring incidents of the plot and the sometimes excellent acting of the performers are all over- shadowed by the daring realistic introduction of a fire engine anda pair of handsome, well- trained horses. Their appearance was greeted with loud applause, and when, in the third act, the noble animals took their places at the pole at the sound of the alarm and bounded off with the engine the enthusiasm of the large audi- ence was intense. A large hound also comes in for a good share of admiration. Harry Lacy as Jack Maniey, Jos, Wilkes as Doe Wilbur, Byron Douglass as John Bird, M. J. Gallagher as Jo Jones, Chas, Lothian as Willie Manley, Virginia Harned as Elinore Fordham and Weevie Vivian as Cad Wilbur were all that could be desired. The musical ability of the firemen was at once recognized and each effort was Jromptly en- cored. “The Still Alarm” will be given throughout the week, with Wednesday and Sat- urday matinees, Haxuts Bou Tneater.—A crowded house greeted Prof. Bartholomew and his trained horses at Harris’ last night. The program, while embracing some features which have been seen here before, presented many new evidences of equine sagacity, and each animal proved its individual intelligence. The court scene and the battle with which the entertuin- ment closes were perhaps the most attractive numbers, though all were interesting. Kenyay’s Tuzater.—Gus Hill’s world of novelties proved to the large andience at Ker- nan’s fast night that its claim to be one of the best shows on the vaudeville stage was well founded. All the acts were neatly done and en- cores were so frequent that nearly two com- plete performances were given. Tue Grove Tugater.—This week,in addition to Joyce & Carroll’s burlesque company, the bill in the Globe includes the bell specialty troupe with the Tybells in their hoop la perch act, the Sheppard sisters, vocalists; Prof. Fox, the bird and animal imitator and many others equally good, > Visiting Firemen from Harrisburg, Pa A jolly party of firemen left here this morning at 11 o'clock, after having enjoyed themselves for twenty-four hours in the nation’s capital, There were sixty-four persons in the crowd, all members of Hope steam fire engine company, No. 2, of Harrisburg, Pa. They left home yes- terday morning and came directly here. No. 2 engine house, on D street near 12th, was then visited and the men on duty serenaded, The visitors then marched up to 13th street to Penusylvania ave and thence eastward on the north side. Midway between 12th and Lith streets they were surprised to find No. 2's big glistening “steamer” and hose cart, with the accompanying horses and men drawn up in line alongside the car track.
