Their sons, Harold and Coker, will spend the winter here with a tutor preparing for college. Mr. and Mrs, J. H. The family of Chief Engineer Philip Inch have returned to the city from their summer home at Asbury Park, New Jersey. Mr. Henry Conradis will leave Thursday for New York, and will sail for Europe on the steamer Fulda on Saturday. He will visit Germany, France and Austria, in which places he will sojourn for about eighteen months. Miss Cornelia Clay, daughter of Col. Charles Dudley Rhodes of the sixth cavalry, U.S.A., left last night for his regiment, stationed at Fort Wingate, N. M. Mr. John H. Wilmot and family have re- tarned from Orkney Springs. Miss Lillian Shaffer has entered the sopho- more class in Lutherville seminary, where she Will also take up vocal and instrumental music. Mrs. E. T. Bartlett, who, for the last eleven years has been the efficient American secretary of the Chinese legation at Washington, retires with the outgoing minister on account of fail- tog health. He left the city in May last for Farmington, Conn., and we learn that he is not well —— to return and resume his duties at the legation. Mr. Bartlett has been a resident of Washington since 1856, and Was for many years the Washington corre- pondent of prominent northern journals. He ‘was for ten years clerk of the House committee of elections. Henry Johnson, fora similar offense, paid his fine. Wm. Atkins and Lillie Gray were charged with disordely conduct and were fined 5 each. DISTRICT GOVERNMENT. THE PROPERTY CLERK'S ESTIMATES. Property Clerk F. 0. Beckett has submitted to Major ymond the estimates for the sup- eS of his office during the coming fiscal yeai is estimates cover one property clerk $1,600, one clerk at 21,200, one clerk at 21,000, one clerk at $800 and one messenger at $600. He says that the employes of his office are effi- cient and reliable and recommends the above small increases, making the expenses of his office only $900 more per annnm. During the past year, he says, the labors of the office have een greatly increased. The increase in ap- propriations for public schools, manual train- ing, new furniture and supplies and for the police department, the fire department and other branches of the District government has caused a proportionate increase in the labors of his office, which is shown in the number of requisitions forwarded to him for action, the number being 4,360, an increase of 710. The number of orders for supplies amounted to 9,800, an increase of 1,500. ere were 5,190 vouchers forwarded to the auditor for payment during the year, an increase of 1,360 over last year. THE FREE COOKING SCHOOL NEEDS AID. The report of the Washington mission school of cookery which was recently submitted to the Commissioners shows that the school was es- tablished ten years ago, during which time 700 pupils have received free instruction in cook- ing and seventeen have been trained as teach- ers, Last year 124 girls received weekly free lessons in cooking, 116 of whom were detailed from the colored’ public schools, Seventeen normal school pupils also received instruction as teachers of cooking The term of instru tion is for one year only, consisting of thirty progressive lessons, The expense of the school during the it ten years has been borne almost entirely by one iady who now finds her- self unequal ttae take ane appeals to the Commissioners to put the school upon a busi- ness footing.
