They Have a Good Time—A Banquet Which Closed the Round of Pleasure. ‘The New England grocers have gone. They left this morning at 7 o'clock, @ thoroughly contented crowd, convinced that Washington is the most beautiful cityon the face of the earth. So well pleased were they with their treatment and with what they saw that they were almost unanimous in expressing a desire to come again next year and to spend less time in looking at comparatively unimportant places along the route over which they will travel from their homes. Yesterday was a busy one with the excursionists; they wanted to see as much as possible of the city before starting for Mount Vernon. Mr. Johnson made arrange- ments with Captain Blake which resulted in a second trip of the steamer Corcoran, and shortly before 4 o'clock a boat load of grocers and the usual feminine accompaniments braved the chilling river breeze and the perils of the Potomac that they might view the tomb of the man who was the father of the family in which New England is embraced. A DINNER AT WILLARD’S. The event of the evening in connection with the excursion took place in the tearoom of Willard’s hotel. A long table was loaded with things edible and there were glasses on the cloth to indicate that the liquids had not been forgotten. Around the board were seated the following persons, guests of Mr. Johnson: Rey resentative E. A. Morse, T. J. Lasier, L. Emory, Capt. W. H. Hutchinson, Tourist Agent 8.W. F. Draper and Traveling Passenger Agent H. J. Toy of the Pennsylvania railroad, G. B. Wallis, Pi and Ira 8. Fallin, of Thurber, Why- land & Co.; Mr. Byrne, representing the Bos- ton Herald and traveling with the party; A. Maurice Low, Boston Globe; Marshal Cushing, Boston Advertiser; C. A. Conant, Boston Post; Lewis G. Lang, New York Press; Aubrey ©. Hamilton, Washington Press; Dr. Frank T. Howe and Geo. H. Harries, Evenino Stan. Everybody delivered a speech except Col. Cushing, and he sang two songs in remarkably fine style. Toasts were disposed of witl celerity and mutual compliments were freely indulged im. The one man whose fountain of enlogy never ran dry was G. B. Wallis. His name was a guarantee fo the newspaper men that he was all right, for the entire journalistic world bas heard of Dr. Wallis, who for more & generation was on the editorial staff of WINDING UP A PLEASANT TIME. Votes of thanks were given on behalf of the © of the Pennsylvania railroad, to the F. A. Kennedy company of Cam- bridgeport, Mass., for providing busses free of charge to an aggregate of about 500 excursion- ists, and to the company’s agent, Mr. Bennett, for his many and persistent courtesies, and lastly to the representatives of the press who Were present for the interest they bad mani- fested in so tangible a fashion, Souvenirs of smoking tobacco and perfumery were dis- tributed after the entire company had joined in singing ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” in connection with several names, Several of the party adjourned to one of the | parlors, where a number of young ladies were, and enjoyed Col. Cushing's vocalizations, which were accompanied on the piano by Dr/ Howe. It was after midnight when thy delight fully informal festivities came to an end and the crowd dispersed. sunbs Se Arrested in Richmond.
