How Miss Lillian Lewis Got Fooled in a Pair in Chicago. A good story is told about Lillian Lewis. During a recent engagement in Chicago she had oceasion to wear a pair of black silk stook- ings in the first act ofthe play. So that no accident should happen she sent her maid to | buy a new pair, giving her strict injunctions to be sure and get them fast black. The maid brought home a pair warranted to be fast dlack—ecid, soap, potash, sunlight or moon- light could not fade or faze the blackness of those stockings. Miss Lewis stuck her neat little foot into those stockings and wore them ip the first act. In the next act she wearsa beautiful white brocaded satin, and with this, of course, she wears white satin slippers and a pair of thin white silk stockings fine as a cob- web. After the stormy first act the actress re- paired to her dressing room snd the black stockings were pulled off, when, lo and buhold! the dainty feet were black as Barnum's Zulus. ‘Toilet soap, cold cream and vaseline—all wei Of no avail” The fast black did not stick to ti stockings, bat it stuck to the feet and wouldn't “— @ bit. “T can’t go on like that,” cried the emotional with genuine emotion; “those white ot are so thin that the black on my fect would show right through. What shall i do?” The soubrette suggested turning on the hose, and after dodging fusilade of pin cushions, curling irons, powder puffs and perfume bottles init she concluded to retreat. Finally the veteran Stage mauager came to the rescue. “Can't get that off?” said he. “Odds bodikin, T'll get it off.” and he did. He was gone about three pom and returned with his two hands full of soft soap, with which he covered the fair Lillian’s ® peal extremities. In a few minutes ‘the lady sailed on the stage all smiles. To the Editor of Tux Evenine Stan: Tama girl andI want something, and as I want it very badly I have decided to ask for it for myself and suffering companions, We want a gymnasium! We want some place where we can practice our calisthenics and have the advantages of plenty of room to swing our clubs in and plenty of clubs to swi: to be able to go down to the gy light and airy costumes swing on trapeze, tare ona bar, jump from spring boards, hit sand bags, kick, and, if we feel so inclined, punch each other's heads, In fine, we want the advan- tages er physical development which are ac- corded to men, and then wo will show them that we teo can say “just feel that muscle,” and with reason. We ride a great deal and we are getting one- sided. We want some place where we can ex- ercise the other log. e have Indian clubs and dumb-bells, and as soon as we begin to practice our mothers rush in and say: “Do be careful of the chandelier—there, you're sure to break your mirror!” We want some place where there are no chandeliers aud no —— Why does not some philanthropic donate @ sum of money to found a girls’ nasium? Or might not one of the athletic clubs give us au unoccupied hour for exclusive use of their gymnasium to practice in? We really want to be strong and healthy, and if you, Mr, Editor, will only think of the need we girls have for strength of arm, I am sure you will espouse our cause. It isn'ta bit pleasant (I'm told) to have some horrid man determined te steal a kiss—and when Pin exert your ut- most strength—to know t you haven't a show against him; while he laughs in your face your puny efforts, U gh! but just give us a chance and we'll show them that their woting thant in physical attainments is no more lasting than in mental ones. Just let us have our Tights! Not that I am a re; woman’s-rights woman. Heaven forbid! I have always obtained my rights without fight- ing for them; but I Cy kk that if men want pretty. healthy wives, women who will be elpers in their life struggle and not peevish invalids or bee gaze incumbrances, they will give them achance to develop their physical energy, and find with perfect health, beauty and good tempers. BLB. alicia GRUMBLING AND NAGGING. A Little Sermon Which Should Go with the Wedding Ring. From the Quiver. For want of a little thought many a wedding ring has cut, as it were, the wearer's finger to the bone. Many a wedding ring has been heavier than @ ton of lead. Men must make allowances for women as women, if they want to be happy themselves and to make their wives happy, and women must make allow- ances for men and for men asmen. They each have their own troubles and their own needs, and very often the one does not understand and cannot understand the needs of the other. Men have their own troubles and worries, and blag have theirs; let each 7 ‘assured of that pene the other and act accordingly. It sppreiaieddou't be afraid of that.
