4 THE EVENING STAR, |“Riceros Our: Fon Tax Bors. | A Gram Orrosromrr. HINGTON: THE EVENING STAR bas tne fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the World, and as an Advertising Diedium is worth mere than all the other papers pubusned im Washington. eee Bew York Office: Room 93, Tribune Building, Revival of Business. With the advent of autumn, absentoes are beginning to return to the city, and business of all kinds will soon revive. Children must ‘be made ready for school, whether in or out of town; clothing for the approaching season must be provided; winter supplics of all kinds must be telked over and procured; perhaps a change of residence or business stand may be thought desirable; bonuses and rooms will be putin fresh order, by overhauling the old furnishings or adding some new article of fuxury or necessity; in short, » hundred or more things must be had or done; and a gen- eral air of increased activity will at once be observable about the city, both on the business and domestic side of life. All these things mean opportanities for those who have sagacity and enterprise enough to take advantage of them by making known to the whole public what they want, or what in- ducements they have to offer customers. For this purpose, of course nothing comes any where near the columns of Taz Star. They are literally withouta competitor as a business- bringer. This is true of every issue of the paper, but it is conspicuously true of the great 12 page Saturday editions, which are thought- fully read by nearly every person in the Dis- trict of Columbia who is able to read. Tomor- row's issue will be an exceptionally attractive one, and will afford to advertisers in every line of interest an unequaled opportunity to make their announcements widely known; and those who wish to combine economy with enterprise in the conduct of their business will do well to bear this fact in mind. To secure the best re- sults in this direction, through tasteful display, proper arrangement and classification, adver- tisements should be sent in this event af practicable, or as early Saturday morning as possible, and in all cases not later than 12 o'clock noon. Until the powerful double steam engines now being built for Tae Srancan be made available only two of its three immense light- ning printing machines can be run, so that itis necessary to close the forms earlier than usual, in order to work off and circulate the enormous Saturday editions before dark. Advertising patrons will therefore serve their own interest as well as accommodate the office by bearing this reque.t in mind. See It is stated by Postmaster Ross that through the appointment of a mounted collector the department will prevent any increase of labor to the heavily-burdened mail carriers from the extensive use of the new boxes for bulky arti- eles. The local service will thus be improved | without adding to the hardships of an over- taxed class of public servants. It iggratifying to note the evidences of interest taken in the affairs of the local post office by the Postmas- ter Geaeral and his assistants. The capital | hopes that a leading feature of the just and friendly policy which the Postmaster General and his department have adopted im the | treatment of the local office will | be a determined effort to give! Washington a post office building which will be reasonably creditable to the national eap- ital, The vast and important work of such an Office at the seat of government demands spa- cious and well-equipped quarters. Their loca- tion at the capital renders the kind of accom- modations actually furnished conspicuous and notorious. Itis shameful that such an office should be compelled year after year to perform its important functions subject to the serious inconveniences and annoyances of unfit, rented quarters, which would disgrace a respectable American village. Among the popular features of the Post Office department's policy none could be more commendable than that which would associate the name of the present ad- ministration with the erection of a suitable post office building at the capital. Esch additional collection of opinions upon the subject of the proper site of the world’s fair of 1892 develops the fact that the national capi- tal is the only location which can command more than a sectional support, The votes of commercial bodies and the mayors of cities of over 15,000 population, collected by Public Opinion, furnish the latest evidence on this point. Fifty-five votes are cast in favor of Washington, 96 for Chicago, 34 for New York and8 for St. Louis. Of Chicago's votes all are from Illinois or neighboring states, except 8, of which two come from Pennsylvania and 1 from Kentucky. New York's votes are all from New York or neighboring states except 7, of which 5 are from southern and 2 from western States. ‘St. Louis's votes are from Missouri and Aransas, Washington's votes are drawn from north, south, east and west, from Florida to Maine, from Baltimore to Duluth, from Boston and Norfolk to Indianapolis and Kansas City. The votes for Washington are cast with approval of the idea that a national sppropriation shall cut s large figure in meeting the expenses of the fair, and nearly all of the voters for other cities express the opinion that a national appropriation as well as private subscription must be relied upon. Thirty-two votes are cast for a national appro- Ppriation exclusively, There are suggestions from voters that if the money is not raised by Private subscription in the city of their first ehoice they will favor the national capital, ‘There have been indications in previously pub- lished opinions that the city of local promi- nence has been favored by many who believe, outside of the influence of sectional interest, that Washington is the proper place and will favor it as second choice. The capital is the compromise candidate in the sectional conten- tion, and, if the expenses of the fair are to be largely met by national appropriation, is the only appropriate site. The Knights Templar parade next month will place the capital on exhibition almost to the same extent as an inaugural procession. The thousands of visitors and residents who take partin the parade evidently intend to make the spectacle, so far as they are concerned, a beau- tiful and impressive one, The city ought to, and doubtless will, do its part to aid the spec- tacular effect by adorning itself for the occa- sion in its gayest attire. Especially should the buildings along the line of march be so dee- orated as to form a fitting frame work for the marching column. tive of the first inited ‘With us that includes everything. ‘We don't stop ‘short of their shoes, Iv'll be funny if you don’t have to get them efi extra patr or two of Pante—snd right off, too, We've strength- ened that festure this year, Gone into it as heavily as in the Men’s—and Just as carefully, The prices are not what you'll expect—They're lower.
