How the Washingtons Were Defeated by the Clevelands—Other Games. Cleveland won yesterday's game from Wash- ington in the first inning, taking a lead then that the home team could not overtake. The as | 8COre was 3 tol. Indeed, Haddock’s hit over the fence in the eighth inning was all that saved the local leaguers from a shut out, The Senators played well enough in the field, but could not bat with any effect. Haddock and Daly and O’Brien and Zimmer were the bat- teries, Cleveland played very snappy ball and won easily, The work of Twitchell, Stricker and Radford was excellent, saving several runs. Arthur Irwin played a good game at short and Wilmot made a trio of fine catches. In the first, with Hoy and Wise out, Mack dropped a safe one between McKean, Twitchell and ‘ealeer. but was thrown cut while trying to steal, Knight's decision being just a little shaky. Then the Infants scored all of thei runs and WON THE GAME. Radford cut the grass with a hot liner on Wise’s left, which Sam fumbled, A passed ball put Radford on second and Stricker placed a stinger over second, sending Radford home. Hoy returned the ball to Daley with a prett: throw and Tom caught it on Radford’s shor deras he a him, several feet from the plate. Knight, however, called him safe and the next moment McKean bad smashed a hit out to Hoy again. Stricker scored and Mc- Kean reached third on the throw in, which went through Daly to the stand. Twitchell lifted a ball that looked as eos it was going to drop over the fence, but Wilmot was under it, his back being against the boards, McKean scored on the out. Then Tebeau put a ball in almost the same place and gave Wilmot a chance for another beautiful catch, which he accepted. McAleer put up a foul for Daly. Both sides were outim order in the second, in the third, with two out. Haddock reached first on balls and Wise and Hoy retired at first, Radford did the same and Wise made a great one-hand catch of Stricker’s liner over his head. McKean and Twitchell then hit safely, but Tebeau flied to Hoy. The fourth was quickly played, each side having but three men to bat. Arthur Irwin made a pretty stop and throw of Zimmer's deep bounder. 18 THE FIFTH, with his brother out at first, John Irwin made an infield hit to McKean and beat it to first. Daly flied to McAleer and Carney went to first on balls, being forced at second by Haddock’s hit to McKean. In the latter half, with two out, Stricker drove an easy bounder through Jobn Irwin and reached second and then third on Daly's high throw, but McKean struck out, After Hoy was out at first Wise made e clean base hit. Mack drop; one in right field, ap- parently safe, but Radford captured it after a good run. Wilmot gave Twitchell a chance anda muff resulted, Wise going to second, Capt. Arthur was not equal to the occasion and ‘Twitchell made short work of his fly. After Twitchell was out Tebeau hit fora base and was forced by McAleer, who reached second on Wise’s muff of Daly’s beautiful throw. Faatz then guve John Irwin an easy fly. Jobn led off in the 7th with a pretty hit over shortstop and went to second on a passed ball, Daly flied to Twitchell in midway left-center and John was thrown out when he tried to wake third on the out. SAVED FROM A SHUT OUT. The eighth saw the Senators save themselves from nine goose eggs. Haddock, who had had a chance in the fifth to tie the score when two men were on bases, lifted the ball into the alley just over left field fence with no one in front of him. Hoy struck out and Wise gave O'Brien an easy bounder, Mack was touched on the arm with a hed ball and Wilmot made his first hit. Arthur Irwin might have won the game with a two-bagger ‘or possibly witha single, but he hit to Stricker. Wise made a couple of neat catches from McKean and Tebeau in the last half, and then Tebeau banged the ball against right field fence for two bases. McAlger bit to \dock, who fum- bled just long enough to let the runner reach first, but turning quickly caught Tebeau off third and ended the inning. In the ninth John Irwin lied to Radford, and Daly, after reaching first on balls, was forced at second by Carney. Haddock would have liked another home run, but he could not get the ball out of Twitchell's reach and the game was ended, Washington made 6 hits and 5 errors, and Cleveland 6 hits and 1 error. OTHER GAMES. New York won from Pittsburg, 9 to 4, the game being called at the end of the eighth on account of darkness. Welch and Brown, and Staley and Miller were the batteries, New York made 12 hits and 2 errors, and Pittsburg 8 bits and 6 errors. Boston dropped @ game to the Indianapolis, 8 to 7, after hey ba: the game well won. The Hoosiers pounded the bali in the ninth for 6 runs. In the Police Court yesterday afternoon Prosecuting Attorney Armes called Judge Mills’ attention to the case of Harry Wilson, charged by Sergeant Brosnan with permitting gaming in premises under his control. This is the case resulting from the raid made on the meeting rooms of the Elkwood club, at Ne. 601 C street northwest, where Wilson conducts a cigar store.
