It is not often that any one comes to the de- fense of gambling pure and simple. The great and undoubtedly growing multitude addicted to it in its various phases, from roulette, faro, and mutual pools up to those forms which are more or less mixed with legitimate business transactions, never trouble themselves by searching for grounds upon which to base a vindication. They do not, as a class, care whether there are any ethical reasons for or against an: Practice to which they have taken ney. Itis not, however, a matter of sur- prise in these days when, gambling, especially on the race course, has reached such an extent particularly in England and in France, and has drawn into it so many who have been wont to frown upon the popular excesses of a too much indulged human nature, that a study of how much is really bad and how much may for any satisfactory reasons be excused in gam- bling should be made. The London Spectator paid 8 the attempt and after it has found all that can be reasonably urged in its favor, it concludes that ‘there can be nothing wrong in making an amusement of running a small risk, 8o long as the price 9 you pay for that amuse- mentis not more than the mile Ae you pay for any other amusement e devoid o} pf or of Fong elements,” hatever truth there isin unfortunately hampered b: fact ee the otber amusements equally ovoid elements are Bhd ccs eee ee THE EMPEROR OF CHINA. It will prevent the rebuilding of the body after sickness and will waste away the most robust if not checked. And, worse than all, it is@ prolific source of madness. To become unable to sleep soundly, oreven reasonably well, is cause for serious alarm, It is also a source of great suffering. Any remedy, therefore, which will induce sleep to kiss the eyelids which have wooed the drowsy god in vain will Prove a boon to every one. The causes of insomnia are legion, but outside of gen- eral nervous debility and chronic disor- der of the nervous system, whether caused from mental or nervous disease. or from some injury to the — centers, the causes of sleep- lessness may put down to anything that causes the bivea to flow to the brats ta fa creased quantities, Strong physical oxerelon, rapid breathing or deep thought will, ing to the best authorities, conduce to yes about a state of sleeplessness, And unless checked it will grow until it becomes serious, It may be siated, as a fact pcm b= § by many who find themselves unable to sleep, that their insompia arises trom carelessness on their part in tailing to observe certain easily ae certamed rules in regard to sleeping. ‘THE BEST TIME TO SLEEP, The body cannot sleep while the brain is ex- cited. But few people can do this on gccount of the light and noise. Hence, the old but erroneous idea that only sleep at night could thoroughly rest and re- cuperate the body and mind after their labors. This is abundantly proved in the case of in- fants and convalescents. Both sleep in day- time equally as well as at ht, and both grow more while sleeping than wi aawake, PURE AIR A NECESSITY.
