A Uniontown special to the Philadelphia Press says: A committee of Dunkard preachers | has been investigating charges that have been preferred against Elder John C. Johnson of Uniontown. It is alleged that Rev. Mr. John- son has not sufficiently discouraged the spirit of pride that has grown up in his congregation, and that under his ministry the sisters have been allowed to cultivate a love of finery as seen in the wearing of loud hats, feathers, bustles, bangs and other articles of personal adornment in violation of the discipline, as plain apparel is required by that church. The visiting committee, consisting of Rev. Messrs. Stoner, Long and Arundel, carried on the investigation with great secrecy, taking tes- timony from the members of Rev. Mr. John- son's congregation. They found the charges sustained apd Elder johnson will be silenced unless he succeeds in visit to Alaska, ee the — which he Aine at- ake tempt in his appeal to the general conference. DMSTEICE GOVERAMEBE. It is understood that what governed the home secretary in recommending the preroga- tive of mercy to the crown was a doubt as to whether sufficient arsenic had been adminis- tered to Maybrick to cause his death and as to whether death really came from arsenical poisoning. The unanimous opinion of judges whose advice was sought by Mr. Matthews, and who studied the evidence: was that Mra, Maybrick hae her husband poison with intent to COMMISSIONER HINE ALL ALONE. Commissioner Hine was supreme today. He was like Alexander Selkirk—monarch of all he surveyed. The two other members of the triune — are away Commissioner oo y the sad sea waves and Commissioner Ray- mond in New York. On Mr. Hine’s shoulders rested the responsibility aud he had a fairly bnsy day. Gen. Ordway was one of the more Prominent of the many callers, but his busi- ness was not of immediate importance; he sim- ply wanted to know when the Commissioners would like to have him submit his estimates of ‘the cost of running the District militia for the ing fiscal year. It was then decided to set the arguments in the case for next Tuesday. THE CASE OF NAGLE, After the question of arguing Justice Field’s case uext Tuesday had been settled Gen. Carey read a traverse in Nagle’s case. It simply averred that David Nagle had been a deputy United States marshal since the 17th of June, 1889, and that he was illegally restrained of his liberty for the alleged crime of murder. It then went on to state that Nagle had acted un- der the instructions of the ee General of the United States and the United States mar- shal in shielding and protecting Justice Field and recited the facts that led up to the death of David 8. Terry. It concludes by averring that Nagle’s impris- onment is in violation of the law of the United States in this: That he is in custody for an act done in pursuance of a law of the United States in protecting and defending Justice Field of the United States Supreme Court.
