4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Cireciation ef any Newspaper in the Wertd, Advertising Diedium is werth New York Offices Boom 93, Tribune Building. The Star Out of Town ‘Toe Evesxixa Stan will be sent by mail to any address in the United States or Canada for such period as may be desired, at the rate of fifty cents per month. 62” But all such orders must be accompanied by the money, or de poper cannot be sent, as no accounts are kept wuh mail subscriptions, ey nee All the railroad reports agree in showing that the year 1888 was not a very good railroad year in America. As compared with 1887, which is the nearest standard, it was exceed- ingly poor. The proportion of freight earn- ings to increase of business fell off, rate wars and other things conspiring to cause a good deal of traffic to be carried on at a loss. Mean- while, fixed charges were on the increase; with the result that the net surplus acquired during the year by the roads of the entire country dropped nearly seventy-five per cent. from the showing of the year before. The most profita- ble trade, all things considered, was done in New England and the middle states, where competition is not so fierce, and where the management of the various lines is entrusted— thanks to the conservative spirit of the stock- holders—to the hands of persons made competent by long experience to direct their affairs wisely, rather than those whom the accidents of specu- lation happen to have brought to the surface. Analysis of the figures for the whole country, moreover, shows that the most profitable busi- ness is done in local, as distinguished from through traffic. That is in accordance with the principle fre- quently maintained by Tux Stan that it would be financially profitable for the common car- riers running through. this part of the country to build up their local traffic by good service and fair terms, instead of suffocating a healthy local in order to boom a reckless and often dis- astrous through business. It is gratifying to learn that the statistics gathered from the Union at large bear out the argument so effec- tively, and it is to be hoped that the companies which minister to the interests of our city and suburbs may take the lesson to heart, and spend more and more each year of the money which is earned from the profitable local traffic in the improvement of the local service and the in- crease of the local business. ——————— With the steady lengthening of the days and the gradual cooling of the nights, there comes a reminder of the approach of the opening of the scholastic year, and of the necessity of bringing tbe young people from their seashore and mountain resorts andof setting them to work again. Numberless statements have been made of the advantages of our city as an educational center, but none has done the sub- ject more than the barest justice, The excellence of the public schools here and the high grade of teachers employed are generally conceded. The same rule holds good in the higher seminaries of learning, and in the select schools of all grades. We have indi- vidual educators here whose fame is as wide as the Union, and who could perhaps call the roll of their old pupils in more states to-day than instructors to be found in any other city. The especial abundance of institutions for young ladies which stretch the whole gamut of polite accomplishments, and carry the pupil from the pinafore and kinder- garten stage to that of the diplomaed gradu- ate, is nowble.
