DAILY AVERAGE.......000sscceceeseesseee 25,907 I solemnly swear that the above is @ true and correct statement of the circulation of ‘Tus Evenwve Stas for the week ending August 3, 1888, J. Warr. Hanzox, Cashier Evening Star Newspaper Company. Subscribed and sworn to before me this Ste day of August, A.D. 1889. JonN T. C. CLarx, Notary Public. oo It appears that an elaborate canvass by Prang & Co. of leading newspapers and noted citizens on the subject of a national flower has narrowed down the contest practically to the golden rod and the mayflower arbutus, with the former leading by a handsome majority; and Taz Star finds itename once more in the catalogue of the winning side. It is in excellent company, of course; the list includes not only a great many of the leading newspapers in all parts of the country but such an array of clergymen as Phillips Brooks, Morgan Dix, Howard Crosby, Joseph Cook and Brooke Herford, while Lyman Abbott is so nicely balanced in judgment that he wants the golden-rod for autumn with the mayflower for spring. Harriet Beecher Stowe, Elizabeth Phelps Ward, Lilian Whiting, Julia Ward Howe, and Lucy Stone all want the golden-rod. Sb do Edwin Booth, Lawence Barrett, W. H. Crane, and Fanny Davenport. Among the poets we find John G. Whittier, and among artists Emily J. Lakey, on the same side, while it is announced that similar views are held by such “public men” as Secretary Rusk, Senator Hawley, Judge Noah Davis, Chauncey M. Depew, T. V. Powderly, and Belva Lockwood. ‘The mayflower, nevertheless, has some most worthy advocates, Prof. Felix Adler, Frances E. Willard, Robert Mantell, James Parton, James Redpath, E. L. Godkin, John Boyle O'Reilly and Prof. John Fisk, Justice Hor- ace Gray, Frederick Douglass, Secretary Proc- tor, Postmaster General Wanamaker and Ad- miral Porter being among the leaders, Next to the flowers already named, in the order of popularity come the mountain laurel—chiefly favored in New England—the dandelion, the sunflower and the daisy. These last two have received, however, only one per cent each of the total vote, and below such a proportion it is of course needless to quote the factions controlled by other blossoms, like the violet, for instance, whieh has eminently respectable newspaper backing; the corn, cotton, orange, tobacco, chestnut, dog fennel, rhubarb, stramonium and strawberry flowers, with their utilitarian asso- ciations; the magnolia, the forget-me-not, the sweet pea, the clover, the trumpet-creeper, the Jarkspur and the morning-glory, which bloom for beauty’s sake alone; and the awfally practical wheat flour advocated by one voter in a mill town. The whole subject has brought out an interesting discussion and developed more bo- tanical lore among the people than any ordinary observer would have supposed to exist. The final decision will not be reached for some time Yet, as it is hoped that every citizen at all interested will aim to have his say. It will then remain for some one of the defeated host to Teer A Ware Frsxxet Sor AN ELEGANT ONE FOR A YOUNG MAN TO PUT ON OF A HOT AFTERNOON AND EVENING. MAY BE THEY ARE, BUT IT’S NOT ROW. Not remnants; not soiled; such goods on bargain table at # quarter and one-third of the regular prices, ‘The excellent spring wheat reports from the northwest have begun to show their effect upon general trade throughout the western country. At Chicago and St. Louis the stimu- Jus is felt, though business is there so diversi- fied that a spirited tone in any one branch is only slightly reflected in other branches. In Minneapolis and St. Panl, Milwaukee and Omaha, however, an incipient “boom” all along the line is the result of the cheering prospect. Kansas City, the outlet for the winter wheat region, holds her own, though she does not wake ups great deal. As inter- esting as any of the visible signs of promise is the spur which the crop news has railroads, When there is plenty o! do there isno need ofa fight between rival lines of carriers, for each can count upon a sufficiently profitable traffic, and to cut rates needlessly means the deliberate throwing Sway of so much money. Hence there are re- turns of the impulse toward peace between the lately warring corporations, This has a ten- dency to make managers, stockholders and speculators on the bull side of the market feel more comfortable than they have for several months, and, as far as the state of the quoted stock operates as an index of popular feeling in general, it may be said that there is a wide- CARPET DEPARTMENT. 1,050 yards Best Ingrain Carpets, S5e. per yard. 2,000 yards Tapestry Brussels Carpets, 450. per yard. 3,000 yards Best Tapestry Brussels Carpets, 70c. per yard. 750 yards Body Brussels Carpets, 80c. per yard. 4.500 yards Best Body Brussels Carpets, $1.00 per yard. 900 yards Velvet Carpets, 80c. per yard. 2,500 yards Best Velvet Carpets, $1.00 per yard, 2,700 yards Best Moquette Carpets, 91.10 per yard.
