I solemnly swear that the above is a true and correct statement of the circulation of ‘Tur Evenrve Stax for the week ending July 6, 1889, F. B. Norgs, ‘Treasurer Evening Star Newspaper Company. Subscribed and sworn to before me this eighth day of July, A. D. 1889, Jouy T. C. CLarx, Notary Public. oo A number of leading trade organizations and prominent business men of New York and Brooklyn are already on record as conceding the fitness of the selection of Washington as the site of the exposition of 1892, and are num- bered among the supporters of the project. The nomination of New York or some of its suburbs in adjacent states or on adjacent islands as a substitute for the Capital as tle site of the exposition is backed by only a few New Yorkers. These few are already divided among themselves concerning the particular suburb of that city which shall be honored by selec- tion. Outside of New York the opinion in favor of the Capital as the site, if a world’s exposi- tion is to be held, is practically unanimous. The condition of public opinion in the other commercial cities of the republic will inevita- bly prevent the holding of this exposition at New York. The only substantial result for which the few eleventh-hour advocates of New York can hope is the defeat of the project to make Washington the site of a world’s fair in 1892, and the killing of all plans for an exposi- tion in America in that year. Asarule not much satisfaction is derived even during the performance by those who play the dog-in-the- manger act, and the spectators or the public at large often supplement the performance with substantial indications of their disapproval. ene The history of the Oberammergau passion play shows how easy it is to spoil a good thing by trying to improve it. Thirty years ago the great world knew of the play only through oceasiogal reports from artiste and men of let- terswho had quit the beaten track of Euro- pean travel and hunted their way to the quaint old village. The peasants who took part in it were so thoroughly in earnest that they seemed even to try to lead in their every-day oceupa- tions the lives of the characters represented by them on the stage, as sort of preparation for the great event of each ten-year period, Bat the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 broke in upon the decennial rule, and in 1871 the per- formance attracted such a crowd of sight-seers who flocked to the continent when dan- ger from the international duel was over, that the innkeepers and teamsters and other beneficiaries through all the neighboring country had their heads turned and saw thet there would be profit in making the play a fashionable feature. The presenta- tien of 1880 strengthened this idea and ex- tended it to some managers in Munich, who have now undertaken to revise the text, sup- ply new dresses, elaborate scenery and mechan- ical devices, increase the orchestra and enlarge the auditory so that ten or twelve thousand persons can see the stage. The rustic flavor of the whole affair, which was one of its chief charms, is gone, together with the devout atmosphere which pervaded the performance im the old time. The Oberammergau play is now an ordinary spectacle, like any other in a profane theater. The peace congress has been held at Paris, and already certain belligerents are about to refrain from belligerency. A truce has been declared in Samoa, desertions from Legitime are, it is said, bringing Hayti to a condition of non-belligerency, and the new battle of New Orleans or thereabouts is over, and at least one of the antagonists is pounded into a state of peace. Evidently the people of the world will soon be cured of the bad habit of fighting. ne It is now soberly proposed in case electrocu- tion is discarded as a means of despatching criminals, to substitute suffocation by carbonic acid gas. This scheme would serve the double purpose of putting bad men out of the way and of reminding good men of the perils of poor Ventilation. Mrs. Belva Lockwood's well-timed praises of the French nation and its capital at the inter- national peace congress have made her very pop- ular there, and have probably insured her the votes of Paris and the department of Seine-et- Oise by a practical walk-over when she runs next time for President of the United States. 9 Now that the superfluoses me has been dropped from program, and u-e from catalog and demagog, isn’t it about time to tackle the word yacht, and spell it yo? There is no sense in fooling away so much time and trouble on it as we do now because some of our ancestors didn't know how to spell. —— The proclamations of the governors of Ala- bama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas against prize-fighting seem to have had much the same effect as Canute’s famous command to the sea. By the wonder how many of them saw the “mill.” << THE EVENING STAR: WASHIN ONLY ONE HOUSE IN THIS GREAT CITY THAT 18 NOT DOWN TO ODDS AND ENDS#*OF STOCK IN SUMMER SHOES.
