The regatta of the Patapsco navy, which took place yesterday, was by far the most successfu Baltimore has ever had. Fully ten thousand persons witnessed the races and cheered them- selves hoarse urging their favorites to victory. The course of the races was a mile and a half long, beginning in the middle branch of the Patapsco, near the old glass house, and finish- ing a short distance from the Anne Arundel shore. The races were schedule d to commence at 5:30, but there was an unavoidable delay, and it was past 4 o'clock when one of the large Baltimore and Ohio railroad barges, loaded with amixed cargo of delicate racing shells and men of brain and muscle, came down toward the starting point in tow of a tug-boat. THE SENIOR FOURS. The referees’ tug whistled for the contestants in the first race, and the senior four-oared shells of the Columbias, of this city, and the Ariels, of Baltimore, took their positions. The Colum- bia crew, of Washington, consisted of L T. Reed, bow; L. L. Harban, 2; H. T. Miller, 3; F. A. Nute. stroke; and_the ‘Ariels, of Baiti- more—R. Meyer, bow; W. H. Kanker, 2; J. H. MeClellan, 3, and E. A. Slack, stroke. The start was made at 4:20, the Ariels having the advantage. It was nip and tuck for some time, when the Columbias’ unfamiliarity with the course began to tell and they steered far out of their way, while the Ariels kept steadily along and won in 10:46, Columbia's time 11:09. JUNIOR SINGLES, Considerable interest was manifested in the next event, the janior single scull race. The starters were G. M. Munks, Ariel, Baltimore; P. E. Huneker, Iona, wie and H. W. Meude, Vesper, Philadelphia. Huneker took the lead at the start and was never headed. Time, 11:32 4-5, JUNIOR FOURS. The next event, the juntor four-oared shell, was the most exciting of the day. The prize is a handsome solid silver cup, and has to be won three times before becoming any one’s property. The starters were the Columbia, of Washington, A. T. Stoutenbourgh, bow; L. Shoemaker, 2; R. D. Simms, 3; J. J. O" ‘Connell, stroke; the Ariel. of Baltimore, B. Vansant, jr., bow; A. D. Mausfield, 2; 8. H. Shriver, 3; J. A. Renwick, roke, and the Neptune, of Baltimore, A. fontell, bow; ambleton, 2; J. P. Sadter, R Baden, stroke. ‘The start was a good one, the Neptunes forg- ing ahead, closely followed by the Ariels and Columbias. Here again the lack of knowledge of the course told against the Columb they si Ariels struck a bee line and finished first, six lengths ahead of Columbias, who were nine lengths ahead of Neptune. Time, 10:34 SENIOR SINGLES, The next race was for senior singles, The starters were H. Zuringer, Nonpariel, New York; E. W. Johnston, Columbia, Washington; F. R. Baltz, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; E. H. Pat- terson, Atlanta, New York, and J. Y. Parke, Vesper, Philadelphia, ‘The’ start was @ goad one, and it looked as if an exciting race would ensue, Parke fouled a buoy and droppod out, Zuringer and Baltz made a desperate struggle for first place, but Zuringer’s lead was main- tained, and he finished first by half a length in 11.0634. FOUR-OARED Gras, The starters in the last race (four-oared gigs) were the Virginia, of Richmond; G. B. Pe- gram, bow; A. 8. Petticolas, 2; F. W. Broad- nax, 3; D. Edmond, stroke; W. F. Tinsle; coxswain; the Columbia senior four, W: ington, with Gibson, coxswain, and the Ariel senior four, of Baltimore, A. Muncks, coxswain, ‘The Virginias had all fresh men. After an ex- citing race the Virginias won in 9:56, Colum- bias second, 9:56!;. The trophies were pre- jing at the Carrollton hotel. onsidered the crewsfrom Wash- ington did well. They had never been over the course, and to this more than to anything else | may be attributed their defeat. THE COLUMBIA SENIOR FOUR, Before the Columbia crews left for Baltimore it was understood by the senior four that they club to have a walk over. Such was the situa- tion of Capt. Gibson, who argued that the gig race was of more importance, and in order thai the senior four would not have it row tw, races, he proposed to enter the crew in the gig race only. Thus in the gig race the crew would meet the Richmonds in an equal boat- ing and not be handicapped by tt cxatens and fatigue of a previons race. Capt. Gibson's idea met with the approval of the crew, but some members of the Columbia club had a little too much faith in their crew and strongly ad- vised Capt. Gibson to row the senior race. This Capt. Gibson refused to do unless the Ariels consented to row the gig race first, but the Ariels declined to do this. Nothing was then left to be done but to row the two races, The crew materially feel disheartened over the result, yet firmly believe that had they not rowed in the shell race they would have been winners in the gig. Dr. Lee Harban isa little undecided as to keeping his seat in the gig for the regatta at Philadelphia on July 4, but his friends will endeavor to persuade him to stick to the sweep until after the 4th at any rate. ——>__+ Elections of Officers.
