THE KNIGHTS 0} JOHN. Many Matters Considered at Their Busi- pess Session To-day. A REQUIEM MASS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED DURING THE YEAR—SUPREME COMMANDER DUNN ASD OTHER OFFICERS MAKE THEIR ANNUAL RE- PORTS—THE QUESTION OF UNIFORMS DISCUSSED. Carroll hall presented a busy scene to-day. ‘The delegates to the convention of the Knights of St. John were rather slow in coming to- gether, but great activity was displayed when the convention finally got down to work. Yes- terday was rather a fatiguing day. Not only was the preliminary work of the organization of the convention attended to, but the street demonstration in the afternoon was success- fully carried out, and the banquet in the even- ing wasenjoyed. This morning the delegates had a rather tired appearance, but they still evinced a desire to attend to the important matters of business which had called them to- gether. A BEQUIEM MASS. After meeting in the convention hall at 8 o'clock, a recess was taken until 9:30 in order to attend requiem mass at St. Patrick’s church, which was offered for the repose of the souls of the members of the order who have died during the year. Father Walter officiated at the mass, and the list of deceased members was vead by Father McMahon, of Cleveland, Obio, one of the delegates to the convention. ‘The names of the following deceased members of the commanderies in this city were men- tioned: James E. Smith, St. Peter’s command- ery; Patrick Stewart, J. H. Chase, Dennis Har- rison and Richard Craig, of St. Augustine's commandery. THE BUSINESS SESSION. The session of the convention was resumed at 9:30. Supreme Commander Dunn occupied the chair, and seated on the platform was him was Mr. L. J. Herbert, of this city. In the absence of the first supreme vice-com mander of the order, Mr. Wicklee, the secor- supreme vice-com mander, Mr. Herbert, occupies the second highest post in the present convention, Mr. Herbert is one of the influential colored Catholics of this city. He was born in Mary- land, but has been I ing in this city for the ast twenty-five years. le is one of the origi- nal members of the Knights of St. Augus- tine. a well-known col- ored Catholic organiza- tion in this city. While waiting for the delegates to be seated Supreme Commander Dunn remarked to Mr. Herbert that the arrangments for the reception and entertainment of the members of the con- vention had been admirably carried out. These arrangements were intrusted to a committee composed of members of the three commander- ies in this city. The chairman is Mr. Lewis H. Lanman, of this city. Mr. Lanman has been a resident of this city for the past twent three years, hav come here from New York. He has been identified with Cathohe Societies for seventeen years. He was one of the organizers of the Knights of St. Peter. of this city, was their first secretary and still holds that vftice. He was also prominent in the or-4 ganization of St. John’s * union. Mr. Lanman is a skilled plate-printer and has been employed in the bureau of en- graving and printing for years, As chairman of the committee of arrangements he has per- formed his duties so well as to win the thanks, not ouly of the visitors, but of the local organi- zations that he representa, REPORTS OF OFFICERS, The convention decided to hear first the re- ports of the officers, which were then read. Supreme Commander Dunn in his annual re- port stated that twenty-three new command- eries have been added to the union during the Fear, four have dropped out and three have disbanded. There are at present 135 ¢ manderies, with a total membership of 5.545, not including twenty commanderies from which reports were not received. The su- preme commander expressed the opinion that the widows’ and orphans’ department was the most important feature of the association—a feature, he added. which is more neglected than any other part of the work by a majority of the members. He thought that if the as- sessments were larger a great saving would be effected. He thought that the plan of Dr. J. A. Diement would be expensive. He urged the members to consider carefully all plans sub- mitted for the improvementof this depart- ment. The report suggested that measures be adopted for the celebration of St. John's day by attending divine service anda parade in the cities and towns where commanderies exist. He thought that this plan would be preferable to the practice of having the parade at the meeting of the annual convention. In conclu- sion he said that a general review of the condi- tion of the order shows a bright and promising aspect. CHATRMAN LaviMAN, THE FINANCES, The report of the supreme treasurer, W. P. Ratigan, showed that the total receipts for the year amounted to $11,213.41. The balance on hand is 21,096.47. All the Teports were accepted and ordered to be referred to the proper committee. CONSIDERING CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS, Col. Partridge, of West Virginia, from the Port. The committee then recommended an amendment to the constitution as follows: “Delegates from commanderies not repre- sented im the widow and orphans’ fund shall Rot Vote on questions pertaining to laws regu- lating that department.” Quite an animated discussion ensued, during which it was stated that not more than one- third of the members of the order contributed to this fund. The amendment was adopted. The second amendment reported by the committee was as follows: very candidate making application for membership in a com- Mmandery must become a member of the widows’ and orphans’ fund.” « The committee recommended that this amendment be not adopted. Opinions were expressed by a number of the members which coimeided with the recommendation of the committee. The amendment was rejected. ‘TRE QUESTION OF UNIFORM. The reception and banquet last evening at Carroll hall, given by the members of the commanderies in this city to the visitors, was a very pleasant affair. Rev, Father Walters made a brief speech, and then Mr. Milton E. Smith, the editor of the Catholic Church News, of this city, made an address of welcome. Su- preme Commander Dunn also made an inter- esting address, in which he reviewed the his- tory of the order and its growth and pros- perity. sateen eeitriie THE HAIR GREW OUT AGAIN. Curious Suit of Edward W. Day Against Mrs. Dr. Gabrielle. Yesterday before Justice L. I. O'Neal thecase of Edward W. Day against Elizabeth La Garce, otherwise Mrs, Dr. Gabrielle, was heard—Mr. J. G. Bigelow for the plaintiff and Mr. D. 8. Mackall for the defendant. This is an action to recover $30, which complainant claims to have paid the defendant for removing the hair from the back of his neck under a guarantee that she would so destroy the hair that it would not grow again, and he alleges that the hair grew out again. The defendant claimed that she only guaran- teed to take out the hairs then in sight; that her contract was not as to the undergrowth; and she claimed to have successfully removed by the electric needle the hairs operated upon; but the complainant having been in a hurry, some of the hairs might have escaped observa- tion. St. Mary’s Catholic church, on 5th street, be- tween Washington and H streets northwest, is to-day heavily draped in mourning in conse- quence of the death of Rev. Francis J. Tewes, who had, until recently, been its respected pas- tor. His death occurred last evening at 6:30 o'clock at his mother’s residence, 1747 East Lombard street, Baltimore, and was occasioned by Bright's disease of the kidneys, which, some three or four months ago, forced him to give up the active duties of his pastorate. wiher Tewes wasa native of Baltimore and was educated at St.Charles college in that city, from whence he went to St. Mary's seminary in 1874, and was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Gibbons, 1377. The stores were usually robbed on Sunday. ‘These robberies have given the police considerable trouble, asin each instance the thieves only took money and such stuff as could not be identified. They went through the house and climbed to the roof. From there they went to the attic window of the adjoining house. The window was forced open and the grocery store of Thomas Knowles, on the lower floor, was visited. ‘There they secured 70 cents in cash.
