- WHAT IT ALL MEANS. The Star Has to Greatly Enlarge Its Quarters. ee To Accommodate Its Rapidly Growing Business—A First-Class Progressive Newspaper Establishment. > The extensive excavations now going on on 1ith street, just north of Taz Star Buildings, together with the deposit at the same point of immense pieces of machinery, are attracting considerable attention and exciting general curiosity as to the probable outcome of such formidable preparations. In fact, the hole in the ground is so large and the machinery gath- ering there promises to be so powerful that the preliminary operations concentrate much more interest than the commencement of an ordinary improvement usually secures, The explana- tion is a very simple one, and can be made in afew words. The whole movement means another long step forward on the part of Tur Evexine Star. Ever since the permanent adoption of the double-sheet or eight-page form for the paper, its management has been taxed to the utmost limit to provide working room for the in- creased force required in every depart- ment of the establishment; and, as its business is constantly and rapidly grow- ing, both in circulation and advertising, thus rendering necessary a still larger force, it has become a question of but avery short time when the needs of the establishment would entirely outgrow its present accommodations, which, it may be added here, were considered but a few years ago ample in every respect for a long time yet to come, But the reality has exceeded all expectation. In order, therefore, to meet existing demands and at the same time to make suitable provision for the future, Taz Evgxtya Stan Newspaper Company a few weeks ago secured a long lease on the large and eli- gibly situated lot adjoining its own fine prop- erty, and made arrangements to erect upon it at once a spacious and substantial annex to its present premises, which, when completed, will be equipped with new and powerful machinery of the most improved design and of the best possible construction, adapted in every way to the needs of a first-class progressive news- paper office. The lot secured as above has a frontage of 55 feet on 1ith street, and a depth of 100 feet, running well back to 12th street, and, excepting | necessary area space reserved for light and | ventilation, the new structure will cover the entire lot, thus affording an additional space to each connecting floor in the present building equal to nearly 5,500 square feet. Inthe basement of the new building will be located the boilers, | engines, coal rooms, ash vaults, and one of the delivery departments of the paper. The new mechanical equipment to be thus provided for will be ample in capacity, and in quality the best that designing and constructive skill can produce. In addition to those now in use, a pair of enormous boilers, built by the famous Whittier Machine Company, of Boston, to be furnished and set up by Forsberg & Murray, of this city, will supply heat to the building and furnish steam power to the present engine, and slso to & new magnificent double or twin Corliss engine, built by the W. A. Harris Steam Engine Co., of Providence, and supplied and set up by the Washington Architectural and Bridge Works. These engines, acting separately or together, will furnish any driving capacity needed by the establishment, up to 250 horse power, and will be arranged to drive all the machinery in both the new and old building, including that in the wetting and stereotyping rooms, and the three colossal fast web-printing machines which are required to print the daily issues of the paper. The ground floor will be subdivided in front into two moderate-sized well-arranged | | store or office rooms, and an ample passage- way, leading to the stories above and to the spacious room in the rear, which will be used for the storage of paper, ink, and other office supplies and material. ‘The second and third stories, which for the present will not be required for the uses of Taz Star establishment, will be let to tenants whose occupation calls for a first-class accessible bus- iness location, plenty of light and air, and a supply of steam power; and for the accommo- dations thus provided a number of applications from desirable parties have already been re- ceived. The fourth story, which will consist of but a single room, having nearly 5,500 feet of un- broken floor space, will be in the nature of an | expansion of the present extensive composing and make-up rooms of the office. Thus en- larged, with windows on every side, and ample | sky-lights in the ceiling, Taz Stan’s composing- | room will,in point of size, unobstructed light and | pure ventilation, compare favorably with any in the United States, or in any other country. | The front of the new structure will conform | in general style and appearance to the present | building, and, when finished, the nearly 200 feet of uniform facade on 11th street will pre- sent a somewhat imposing and decidedly attrac- tive appearance. But substance and capacity, | rather than show, are the objects in view, and | the aim of the management is to erect a sub- | stantial, durable building, provided with all | | the conveniences and appliances required by | the purposes for which it is intended; and these are to be secured, at whatever requisite cost of thought, time and money. The building throughout is to be constructed under the sup- pervision of Mr. Frederick W. Pilling, one of the most capable and experienced builders in the city, and will be made ready for occupancy at the earliest possible date, consistent with good workmanshi; ——————————————— THE FLOOD SUFFERERS.
