BUFFINGTON INVINCIBLE. How the Senators were Defeated in Philadelphia—Other Games. The Quaker City team of ball tossers made efforts to retrench themselves after their de- feats in Boston, and succeeded in partially doing so by downing the senatorial sggre- gation by the score of 6 to 1. They earned their victory by means of a scien- tific batting spurt in the first inning that re- sulted in five runs. ‘Seven single hits were made, five of them bunts, and big Sam Thomp- son took firstom balls. After this the Phila- delphians could do but little with the ball, and were retired without scoring in every inning, but the third, when they topped off their score with another run. ‘The Sena- tors drew blanks from the start, only breaking the goose egg combination in the ninth, when Connie Mack bit for three bases, and Haddock drove him home with a single. The batteries for the day were Buffin- ton and Clements, and Haddock and Mack. Both teams played beautiful games in the tield, and the contest lasted but au hour and a half. Sweeny won attention from the crowd by his great playing, and Ebright who covered short Held, took everything that came his way. Shoch played in right. ‘MACK DID THE BEST BATTING of both sides, making s triple and two singles out of three times at the bat. Hoy, Sweeny, Ebright, and Haddock each hit for a base. Buffinton gave seven bases on balls and struck out five, and Haddock gave six bases and struck out of Washington made 7 hits and 1 error (Mack), and Philadelphia 13 hits and 1 error. Curry had not yet recovered from the blow he received in the face on Wednesday and failed to put in an appearance. O'Day and Andrews were selected to do the umpiring and gave sat- isfaction, OTHER GAMES. Boston managed to win from New York, after taking a strong lead at first, and then, by mis- erable fielding, allowing the Giants to creep up to within @ ie of runs of tymg in the seventh. The fnal seore was 10to7. Clark- son and Bennett and Keefe and Will Brown were the batteries, Boston made 15 hits and 2 errors, and New York 10 hits and 4 errors. Chicago kindly defeated the Hoosiers—11 to 10—by playing better ball. Tener, Gumbert and Durhing. . aud Getzein and Buckley were the Retterien. ‘Chicago made 12 hits and 3 errors, and Indianapolis 11 bits and 5errors., Getzein pitched the game away in the first inning by pen ing four bases ou balls, three of them forc- ing in a run each. Cleveland took Pittsburg’s scalp, 8 to 2, by better all-around playing. Beatin and Sut- cliffe and Staley and Miller were the batteries, Pittsburg made 2 hits and 5 errors and Cleve- land 12 hits and 2 errors, At Brooklyn—Kansas City, Brooklyn, 4. From the Nebraska State Journal. One of the last secret organizations to be es- tablished, and yet one destined soon to become one of the most popular, is the “Order of Del- phians,” a secret orgavization especially for those engaged in the profession of teaching. For fifteen years has this order been growing and maturing in the mind of one of the most successful educators, as well as one of the most learned men in this country. and it was not until some time in February that he felt free to give to his companions in his chosen life work the results of his long years of labor, ‘The Supreme Lodge of the Order of Delphians in the United States was incorporated at that time, and since then the order has grown rapidly in public favor. The supreme lodge of the United States of this order has been located in Lincoln. the founders of the order judging this city to be the educational center of the great west and likely to take a pre-eminent place among the great educational centers of the entire country. The grand.object of this association is to promote the educational interests of our com- mon country by the following means: First—By organizing teachers into a band of mutual laborers. Second—To provide an organization for the advancement ot the social reiations aud mutual interest of teachers. ‘Third—To provide libraries for the educa- tional advancement of teachers, Fourth—To provide an organization through which teachers may work harmoniously, therebds dlerating the work of the teacher to the standard of fa gece profession.
