¢ THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C., THURSDAY. y JUNE 6, 1889, x ciITY AND DISTRICT. > Tae Evexrxe Star's subscription lists, the books of the office, and its press and de- livery rooms are at all times open to the wel- come inspection of any person having a color- sble interest in the correctness of its claims as to circulation, This is a guarantee to adver- tisers that is given by few papers in the world, and by none other in Washington! ALMOST A VICTORY. Why the Washingtons Did Not Capturea Game Yesterday. The defeat of the Senators by the Giants yes- terday by the score of 4 to 3 was principally to an inability on the part of the former to hit the ball safely when men were on boses often enough. and again toacase of rattles that seized the home battery in the third inning. The Washingtons were all mixed up in their positions, Shoch playing at short in place of Wise, who burt a finger badly in practice, Mack occupying right field, while Ferson and Clark were in the points. Against them were pitted Welch and Murphy. Itis questionable whether the playing of Clark behind Ferson was wise or aot, for both are youngsters in the league, without any knowledge at all of the New York- ers’ peculiarities. It not far from a certainty that had Mack been behind the bat from the start at least one, if not two, of the tuns made in the second and third innings would not have been made. As it was, Ferson was nervous and unsteady, and in the third pitched two wild balls that enabled runs to tally. The second of these reopened Clark's sore hand and he had to retire from the game, while Mack came up to the plate and Ebright filled right-field. Then Ferson steadied down and there was no more wildness, while he kept the visitors’ hits, some of them long. hard ones, pretty well scattered. The field work was al- most perfect, the Senators doing a little the better. Some of the catches by both left- fielders were excellent, and Murphy earned a generous round of applause by his magnificent catch of Ferson’s foul fly in the seventh. THE GAME. ‘The visitors scored in the second on a hit by Conner, a steal, Clark’s bad throw to second, and Richardson's neatly placed single. Again in the third they got two men around the diamond. Murphy made a hit and went to second and third on a wild pitch. Welch reached first on balls, and Gore drove one to Sweeny that was neatly bandied, and proved Murphy's fate between third and home. Welch reached third and Gore second on the play, and then another wild pitch sent the former in. ‘Tiernen sacriticed to Wilmot and Gore seored. The Statesmen started to catch their opponents in the fourth, and should have made more than the one run _ that resulted from Wilmot'’s single and steal, & passed bail, Hoy's base on bails, Mack’s neat sacrifice to first, and Myers’ base on balls, Bat one was all they could get. and there was a man lett on third and one on second. The visitors would have scored at least a couple in the lat- ter half of the fourth but for poor base ran- ping. Connor was hit and stole second nicely, ame trundle too far over | touched out. a- | son the ing two-bagger to the | but he let his lar, the bag and m nter fence, and came to grief when the bail, handled besatifully by Hoy end Bhoch, en- | countered his person at third im Sweeny's | | clutches. Shoch’s hit, and Ebright’s sacri- fice enabled the Senators to fill second and | third with but one out. Ferson went out ona foul to Murphy. and Wilmot lined out one that would have goye to the right fence had it not met Connor's hands on its path. It was great luck for Koger. A GOOD RALLY. | The home team made a neat rally in the | eighth, but they spelled it with too small an | “r.” and fell one short of tieing. Hoy sent a pretty two-bagger skimming along the rig ine and he scored when Gore dropped Mack’ fly. siye sacrifice sent Mack to third, and BMorriil’s weil-timed hit sent Mack home. | Sweeny, who saved the game on Tuesday with @ he run at just such a juncture, was not up to the notch yesterday, and he struck out. Morrill tried to steal with poor success. Noth- ing more was done by either side except a hit by O'Rourke that availed nothing. Washi ton made 6 hits and 2 errors, and New York 8 hits and 3 errors. NOTES OF THE GAME. Ferson showed great head in the eighth i when, with a man on second and two out, Roger Connor, who had been hitting hard, came to the bat. Roger wanted another hit, but Ferson winked to Mack and tossed four bad ones off to the left of the plete, and the big man went to first oa ball chardson then proved the Wisdom of the move by flying out to Ebright. Umpire Curry received a terrible slap in the cheek trom a hot foul from Hov’s bat in the iourth. He let the pain go on for about half an hour and then bad to give up. After a long consultation between Morrill and Richardson it was decided to take two piayers as umpires, and Sam Wise and George were chosen. The torr officiated at the plate for Washington and on the bases for New York. This arrange- ment proved very satisfactory and the game Was finished without a kick. OTHER Games. Philadelphia seored in the eleventh, and thus wou from Boston, 5 to 4. The bat- teries were Madden, Ganzel and Keily, and Casey and Clements, Boston made 13 hits and 4 errors, and Philadelphia 8 bits and 1 error. Cleveland won two games from Chicago. The first was by the score of 7 to 4, Bakely and Snyder, and Dwyer and Darling being the bat- teries. The Ancients made 9 hits and 1 error, and the Infants 10 hitsand 3 errors. The score | of the socond sume was 6 to 5, Cleveland mak- ing 10 hitsand 3 errors, and Chicago 11 hits and 4 errors, At Baltimore—Baltimore, 12; Cincinnati, 10. At Brooklyn—Brooklyn, 4; Kansas City, 2.” At Philadelphia—Atbleties, 11; Louisville, 10. At Columbus—St, Louis, 4; Columbus, 3. TO-DAY'S GAMES. The team plays to-day in Philadelphia, meet- ing the Ponies after the lattcr’s disastrous trip to Boston. The Senators will have a hard pull to get a game in their present condition. es- pecially as the Phillies will undoubtedly make | lowing prices: strong efforts to retrieve themselves, New York in Boston, Pittsburg at Cleve- land, and In polis at Chicago. Washington folks will not su ffer from « lack of base bail while the Senators are in Phila- delphia. On Saturday occurs the second game of the series between the Heporters and the olicemen for the benefit of police relief i. The former's team will be selected from the following: Williams, Simms, Doyle, Har- ries, MeSween, Kauffmann, Jones, Larner, Lyon aud Dwyer. President Young, of the ational league, will don a mask and officiate the services as umpire, and arrangements ere in progress to keep the immense crowd of people from pressing into the diamond and disconcerting him. A weil-contested game of base ball was played yesterday between nines from the Columbia athletigelub and Deaf Mute college, at Kendall Green, upon the grounds of the latter. which, after hard-fought innings, was wou by the C. A. C. by @ score of 9to 8. ‘The C. A. 'C.’s have an unbroken chain of vic- tories. “They appeared im their new uniforms of blue jersey shirts and tro with red stockings. and belts and caps of club color— red and blue. An Attempt to Blow Up a Church. A dispatch from Pomeroy, Ohio, says: Monday night, while services were being held im the Free Methodist church, near this city, an attempt was made to blow up the build- ing. A lot of wder had been placed under the church, to which a fuse was AR aor snd lighted, but it missed fire. Fully half a peck of blasting powder was taken from under the building after the attempt was discovered by the congregation. At least 100 persons would have been kiiled had the powder been ignited.
